Titanium dioxide is widely used as a pigment in the formulation of printing inks. It is an essential component of white inks that demand high opacity and good hiding power to cover the substrate underneath. It is also used in the formulation of colored inks to increase their color strength and brilliance.
Printing inks come in continuous contact with some surfaces inside the printing machines, especially the printing plates. Inks with high abrasion can cause wear on these surfaces leading to deterioration in print quality over time. Low abrasion is therefore another essential quality of a good titanium dioxide designed for printing inks. The desirable qualities of a suitable titanium dioxide grade for printing ink applications are summarized below:
  • Low abrasion
  • High opacity and covering
  • High gloss and color strength
  • Excellent dispersion
  • Chemical stability
  • Compliance with regulations regarding use of compounds in food packaging and films

Ti-Pure™ TS-4657

Titanium dioxide produced through the chloride process offers several benefits over grades produced via the sulfate process. These benefits include cleaner technology and lower impurities, which result in a brighter color and bluish undertone. Pigment produced through the chloride process, however, can have an abrasion level that is too high for printing ink formulations. The high abrasion causes excessive wear on printing equipment shortening its usable life. Sulfate grades of titanium dioxide have lower abrasion but lack the brightness and consistency of a chloride produced pigment.

Chemours has developed a low abrasion, chloride grade of titanium dioxide that delivers all the benefits of chloride processing with lower abrasion and better consistency than sulfate processed grades. It is particularly suited for jobs requiring long print runs or applications that are very sensitive to abrasion. The table below shows the typical physical properties of Ti-Pure™ TS-4657.

Performance benefits of TS-4657

Low Abrasion

Ti-Pure™ TS-4657 is produced through a chloride process and has been specially engineered to be less abrasive than traditional chloride TiO2 offerings. The new product fills the need for a chloride processed titanium dioxide which does not cause excessive wear on printing plates. Ti-Pure™ TS-4657 is ideally suited to the formulation of water and solvent-based inks for flexographic, digital, and gravure printing of labels and various packaging materials.

Ti-Pure™ TS-4657 produces a high level of whiteness and brightness with reduced wear on printing equipment. The figure below compares the abrasion effect of titanium dioxide grades produced through various processes on a substrate. A standard chloride grade of TiO2 shows high abrasion whereas Ti-Pure™ TS-4657 chloride grade shows a level of abrasion very similar to that of standard sulfate grade.

High Opacity

Inks formulated with Ti-Pure™ TS-4657 show higher opacity in a broader range of colors. When formulated to equal whiteness produced by sulfate grades, Ti-Pure™ TS-4657 based inks produce higher opacity and a thinner film. A smaller pigment quantity can produce the desired opacity and whiteness leading to lower costs.

High Brightness and Whiteness

Chemours’ chloride technology, used in the production of Ti-Pure™ TS-4657, produces a white and brighte pigmentThe extra whiteness and brightness allows printing in a wider range of colors.

Excellent Dispersibility

The alumina surface treatment on Ti-Pure™ TS-4657 reduces the contact between pigment particles resulting in excellent dispersion of the pigment. The improved dispersion reduces energy costs and increases the stability of printing inks.

Good Compatibility

Ti-Pure™ TS-4657 can be blended at a high ratio with other pigments and standard ink grades allowing ink formulators maximum flexibility to achieve an excellent cost-to-performance ratio and the desired abrasion performance.

Consistent Quality

Continuous production technology used for manufacturing Ti-Pure™ TS-4657 delivers a consistent opacity and tinting strength. This consistency requires formulators to make fewer adjustments when using Ti-Pure™ TS-4657 in their formulations.

Ti-Pure™ TS-4657 is an attractive alternative to sulfate processed TiO2 for printing ink applications. The new ink-grade pigment can help customers diversify their supply sources to ensure uninterrupted production. Ti-Pure™ TS-4657 is produced in four Chemours manufacturing plants around the globe. Customers can purchase Ti-Pure™ TS-4657 directly from Chemours through a contract, online from the Ti-Pure™ Flex portal, or through a network of trusted Chemours distribution partners worldwide. Ti-Pure™ TS-4657 is competitively priced and offers quality and consistency that are hallmarks of the Ti-Pure™ brand.

Ti-Pure™ is not just a high-quality ingredient brand. Chemours partners with its customers to meet production challenges, and set their product offering apart from the competition. To find out more about Ti-Pure™ TS-4657, or to request a sample visit the Chemours Ti-Pure™ TS-4657 web page.
