CLAYTONE AF by Byk (Altana Group) is an organophilic bentonite derivative. Acts as an easy-to-disperse, self-activating rheological additive for low to medium polarity solvent-based coating systems. It is easy to disperse and self-activating. It can swell in organic media and build a gel structure (card-house structure) due to weak hydrogen bonding between the single smectite platelets. Prevents sagging and settling in resin-based systems and used as thixotropic thickener and anti-settling agent. CLAYTONE AF is not effective in products without binders, such as lubricating grease, pure solvents, alkyds, processed oils, epoxy-esters, and oil modified urethanes. Recommended for used in rust inhibitors based on salts of oxidized petrolatum, trade sales, wood stains, printing inks, architectural paints and do-it-yourself paints. Suitable solvents and/or resins: Mineral spirits (rule 66), Naphtha, Xylene, Toluene, mixtures of Aliphatic and Aromatic solvents. Is not recommended for oxygenated solvent systems (ketones, alcohols etc.). Recommended dosage is 0.3-1.0% of additive based upon total formulation. Complies with FDA and/or EU food contact regulations.
