Octa-Soligen® Cobalt 11

Technical Datasheet | Supplied by Borchers (Milliken)
Cobalt is the most important drier metal. It results in rapid surface drying and, in combination with lead, in more uniform through-drying of the paint film. Catalyzes redox reactions and even small additions result in the dissociation of autoxidant hydroperoxides up to a change in valency from Co 2+ to Co 3+. A surplus of cobalt may result in defects such as wrinkling, poor through-drying and yellowing. Can be used in all oxidative systems, whether air-or force-drying, in architectural paints, industrial coatings, varnishes. Can also be used as an accelerator in unsaturated polyester resins, resulting in a shorter gel time. In conventional alkyd formulations, the cobalt addition is between 0.03 and 0.08 %, calculated on the solid binder. In systems based on linseed oil, the addition of cobalt metal is 0.02 to 0.06 %, calculated on the solid binder. In unsaturated polyesters, the addition of cobalt is between 0.005 and 0.02 %, calculated on the solid binder.
