Solvay Novecare at Southern Society Coatings Meeting 2013: Promotes Monomers, Additives & more

Published on 2013-04-23. Author : SpecialChem

SARASOTA, FL -- Solvay Novecare is promoting its range of specialty polymers, monomers, additives and defoamers for the architectural and industrial coatings industry during the Southern Society for Coatings Technology Coatings Show 2013, April 21- 24 in Sarasota, Fla., USA.

Solvay Novecare is also presenting a technical paper entitled, "Novel Specialty Paint Additives for Waterborne Formulations."

Solvay recently acquired French chemicals group Rhodia, making it one of the largest global suppliers of surfactants and specialty monomers for latex coatings formulators. Additionally, Solvay now offers a comprehensive portfolio of defoamers, specialty dispersants, advanced wetting agents and other functional additives for paint and coating formulating.

"Solvay is committed to developing breakthrough solutions for sustainable coatings. We have the technology the market needs to reformulate coatings with improved environmental and health characteristics and uncompromised performance," said Simon Mawson, Global Business Director for Solvay's coatings business.

Solvay has five Research and Innovation centers in major regions around the world. Mawson said these resources - plus the company's joint laboratories with prestigious universities, such as the French National Center for Scientific Research (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) - are actively developing the next generation of novel paint additives for its coatings customers.

Featured innovations includes:

  • Rhodoline® OTE, a patented VOC-free and APE-free additive for extended open time in waterborne coatings. Rhodoline® OTE provides a two- to four-fold increase in open time and additional benefits such as improved gloss, scrub resistance and elimination of wetting agents.
  • Rhodoline® FT-100, a freeze-thaw stability additive. Rhodoline® FT-100 is a VOC free, APE-free solution that stabilizes waterborne soft latex-based paints upon freezing during transportation, storage or application. It addresses the latex coagulation issues of low-VOC paints based on soft binder polymers and, whether added to the binder polymer or during paint formulation, Rhodoline® FT-100 provides a finished paint that passes five cycles of freeze-thaw stability.
  • Rhodoline® 621 is a new sustainable defoamer derived from renewable raw materials. It is APE free, zero VOC, silicone free and BrfR compliant for flat to semi gloss waterborne paints and coatings.
  • Rhodoline® DF 540 is a new sustainable defoamer specifically designed for inprocess foam control for latex emulsions and adhesive systems. Rhodoline® DF 540 is APE free, zero VOC and BrfR compliant.
  • Sipomer® Cops 3 is a new polymerizable stabilizer designed to drastically enhance scrub resistance in high PVC paint formulations based on Styrene/Acrylic or Vinyl/VeoVA binders.
  • ABEX® DBR is a new emulsifier designed as a high performance alternative to DPOS (Sodium Alkyl Diphenyl Oxide Sulfonate) in Styrene/Butadiene binders.
  • Rhodasurf® non-ionic portfolio enabling easy transition to APE-free chemistry.

These innovations, designed specifically for sustainable waterborne coatings, are a testament to Solvay's strong sustainable development policy - The Solvay Way. Solvay is convinced the future is dependent upon the responsible way in which its businesses conduct current activities, a way that reflects its commitments to all stakeholders including the environment. Through innovation, partnerships and rigorous assessment of its manufacturing sites and suppliers, Solvay creates sustainable value for its customers.
