International Paints' Eco-friendly Chemical Tank Coating Interline®9001 to Benefit Stolt

Published on 2011-08-08. Author : SpecialChem

Stolt-Nielsen B.V. is the first company set to benefit from International Paint's new chemical tank coating, Interline® 9001.

June 2011 saw the docking of the Stolt Jade chemical tanker at Dubai Drydocks World, where our latest high performance tank lining was applied to one of its 600m2 tanks. From the development of the first parcel tanker in the 1960s and the pioneering of the tank container market in the early 1980s, Stolt-Nielsen has been a leading player in liquid cargo transportation. Its decision to apply Interline® 9001 was perfectly in keeping with its position at the forefront of the industry.

Reducing port time - and increasing efficiency - is a major strategic focus for Stolt, given that a deep-sea parcel tanker spends roughly one third of each voyage in port loading and unloading. The company's Energy Management Project, launched in 2006, is dedicated to improving the energy efficiency of its existing and future fleets, aiming to reduce fuel consumption whilst improving environmental performance.

Interline® 9001's benefits, including lower fuel and CO2 emissions, thanks to the reduced cleaning requirement, as well as low volatile organic content (VOC) and 80% volume solids, will all help to enhance Stolt's efficiency in an increasingly challenging market. Owing to its very high chemical resistance, low absorption and easy clean properties, Interline® 9001 is designed to increase chemical tankers' trading flexibility and deliver considerable operational savings in time and money when cleaning between cargoes, compared to epoxy phenolic and zinc silicate tank linings.

Neil McGurk, Managing Director of Coating Consultants Ltd. who acted as Stolt's coating Superintendent commented, 'Stolt's sophisticated tanker fleet can handle virtually any liquid cargo. Because it can switch easily from one cargo to the next, with minimal downtime and tank cleaning, Interline® 9001 was the natural choice and will help Stolt to continue to meet their customers' stringent demands. The project was completed on time with the applicators reporting that Interline®9001 is easy to use and has excellent spray application properties.'

'We've been working with Stolt throughout the development phase of Interline® 9001 and we're delighted to have carried out the first full tank application of the product on the Stolt Jade', added Paul Devine, Cargo Tank Coatings Product Manager. 'We look forward to supporting Stolt during the lifetime of the coating to enable them to derive the maximum operating efficiencies that Interline® 9001 can deliver.'
