Huntsman Launches First MDI Technology for One-Component Coatings

Published on 2005-05-09. Author : SpecialChem

Specialists from Huntsman Polyurethanes announced that they have created a new MDI technology to improve the performance of one-component, liquid membrane coatings for the construction industry.

Huntsman's unique 1K moisture curing technology is the first product of its kind to meet market demand for an alternative to TDI (toluene diisocyanate)-based systems. The formula has been designed specifically for use in weatherproofing membranes for roofing, in total bridge decking systems and outdoor applications.

It enables the development of one-component liquid coating solutions that cure by reacting to atmospheric moisture, forming a highly flexible coating that can be applied in 2-3mm layers using simple pouring, brushing or spraying techniques. Benefits include superior hard wearing properties and improved durability, plus longer open and faster cure times compared to TDI-based systems.

Marc Broekaert, application and product development manager of coatings, at Huntsman Polyurethanes' Adhesives, Coatings and Elastomers (ACE) division said, "Huntsman's MDI technology solution was developed in response to a strategic analysis of the construction market's coating requirements. Customers clearly highlighted that they were seeking an alternative for existing TDI polyurethane solutions for some specific construction applications. Using MDI technology we have met market expectations and developed a polyurethane solution that offers crack-bridging properties in excess of 400% elongation."

Huntsman Polyurethanes pioneered the development of MDI technology over 40 years ago. Today the company maintains an unparalleled understanding of the chemistry it invented through continual innovation and work with customers to support formulating, processing and handling requirements. Huntsman Polyurethanes employs over 500 scientists and engineers in more than 20 countries worldwide and produces chemicals and systems for customers in the construction, refrigeration insulation, packaging, automotive seating and interiors, furniture, footwear, composite wood products, thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) and adhesives, coatings and elastomers (ACE) markets.

Huntsman Polyurethanes is a business division of Huntsman Corporation. Huntsman is a global manufacturer and marketer of commodity and differentiated chemicals. The world's most significant industries rely on Huntsman operating companies to develop basic products for a variety of markets and end-use applications. Originally known for pioneering innovations in packaging, and later, rapid and integrated growth in petrochemicals, Huntsman today has revenues of $11.5 billion, 11,300 employees and 62 operations in 22 countries.
