Emerald Unveils FOAM BLAST® 4213 & 4149 Defoamers for Low-VOC Coatings & Graphic Arts

Published on 2014-04-28. Author : SpecialChem

Emerald Specialties Group, a business group of Emerald Performance Materials, has introduced two new 100% active FOAM BLAST® defoamers for coatings and graphic arts, including both aqueous and energy curable (UV/EB) applications.

FOAM BLAST® 4213 is an innovative, organo-modified silicone (OMS)/ synthetic antifoam product, while FOAM BLAST® 4149 is a synthetic block copolymer composition developed as a non-silicone alternative. Both new products offer excellent initial and long-term foam control for products such as interior and architectural coatings and flexographic inks.

"Today's formulator wants an effective foam control product that can be easily integrated into inks and coatings without creating finish defects, gloss degradation, curing problems or other incorporation issues," said Thomas Penny, technical manager, industrial foam control. "Our well-known FOAM BLAST® line offers a wide range of foam control products for a variety of applications, but we saw an opportunity to develop new products that would offer superior, long-term performance while also being easy to use and versatile enough for incorporation into both energy curable and aqueous systems. In this regard, our new OMS technology, in particular, provides a significant improvement in compatibility and ease of incorporation without the fisheyes and craters associated with traditional defoamers based on silicone fluids."

FOAM BLAST® 4213 and 4149 can be added at low use levels (0.2–0.6%) during pigment grinding or let-down to achieve excellent long-term foam control and a superior finish free of defects, craters or fisheyes caused by foam. Both are low-VOC and free of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APE).

"These two new products have a lot of overlap in application but provide formulators with a choice in order to optimize performance in specific systems," said Penny. "Both are also highly compatible, offer great shelf life and are easy to handle."

FOAM BLAST® 4213 is optimized for excellent clarity in low-VOC architectural coatings, high-gloss coatings and water-based industrial coatings and flexographic/gravure inks. FOAM BLAST® 4149 is a mineral-oil-free defoamer that is highly recommended for acrylic emulsions, low-VOC coatings, high-gloss architectural coatings, high pigment load coatings and clear and waterborne wood coatings.

Emerald Specialties provides a broad range of FOAM BLAST® and other defoamers for a wide variety of applications, including coatings, inks, adhesives and polymers, produced at its ISO-9001 certified operation in Charlotte, N.C. The group also produces defoamers for food and beverage applications at its SQF-2000 certified operation in Cheyenne, Wyo. Other Emerald products for coatings and graphic arts include Hilton Davis® dispersions, Masil® and Silmera™ specialty silicones, K-FLEX® low-VOC coalescents, Nychem™ emulsions, Good-Rite® additives and CVC epoxy products, modifiers, catalysts and accelerators.
