Degussa’s Performance Silica Sipernat® in Livestock Feed - Making Powder from Liquids and Paste

Published on 2004-10-08. Author : SpecialChem

Sometimes you just have to use a powder; especially in automated processes, where dosing has to be precise and secure. Anyone who has ever stood in a feed mill knows the importance of accuracy. Enormous mixers roar, a ghostly hand appears to open and close the computer-controlled valves dosing special additives that are precisely measured within a gram to reach the optimal composition of the livestock feed.

Frequently, these additives are available in paste or even liquid form: Not many people know that vitamin E, in its purest form, is an oil. And to make sure that everything that is mixed together has the same consistency - ideally, a free-flowing, dust-free, and non-caking powder or granulate - carrier substances such as Sipernat® performance silica (precipitated silica) from Degussa, Düsseldorf are used in livestock feed production. Carriers allow the liquid or paste substances to be converted to a free-flowing powder, and ensure uniform distribution of these feed additives in the livestock feed. Sipernat® carrier silica by Degussa are highly absorbent, free-flowing and chemically inert or unreactive. More information on the potential uses of Sipernat® in this special field of application can be found in Degussa's recently published brochure "Performance Silica for the Feed Industry."

With Sipernat®, Degussa's Advanced Fillers & Pigments Business Unit supplies the feed industry with the world's most complete range of performance silica. The strong application and handling technology available to Degussa customers underscores the company's commitment to service. And then there's the high quality of the manufactured products: Sipernat® 22 is viewed as the benchmark for many carrier applications in livestock feed production. Free-flow additives like Sipernat® 22 S also improve the flow property of complex feed mixtures. Eight sites on three continents produce the Degussa performance silica and highlight the global positioning and international alignment of the Degussa business unit, which also has long-time customers in livestock feed production.

Degussa is the worldwide leading supplier of performance silica, which are used as a reinforcing filler or carrier in a diverse range of applications. Synthetically manufactured performance silica like Sipernat® are fine, loose, white powders that are also available for special applications in granular form. Their particles are amorphous, and thus harmless in their use. Chemically, performance silica contain up to about 99% silicon dioxide (SiO2). Thanks to the extensive range of physico-chemical data, performance silica have versatile properties that make production processes smoother and finished products more efficient. They also cover a broad spectrum of applications. We find them in many of our daily activities, from the abrasive and thickening agents in the toothpaste we use in the morning, to the fillers and coating pigments in our paper, to the reinforcement fillers in our car tires.

The carbon black, silica and rubber silanes product lines make the Advanced Fillers & Pigments Business Unit one of the most important strategic business units of Degussa AG. Some 2,900 employees generate annual sales of approximately € 1 billion (2003) at thirty sites on five continents.

With production facilities at six sites in five countries, Degussa's Feed Additives Business Unit concentrates exclusively on the market for livestock feed production. Degussa is the only company worldwide that manufactures all three of the amino acids essential for animal nutrition - DL-methionine, L-lysine (Biolys®), and L-threonine - at its own facilities. The company's Feed Additives Business Unit is the world market leader in amino acids, and sells its products in 100 countries worldwide.

Degussa is a multinational corporation consistently aligned to highly profitable specialty chemistry. In fiscal 2003, its 47,000 employees generated sales of € 11.4 billion and operating profits (EBIT) of € 878 million, making it Germany's third-largest chemical company and the global market leader in specialty chemicals. Innovative products and system solutions enable Degussa to play a valuable and indispensable role in the success of its customers, as summed up by our claim "creating essentials".
