ddchem Waterbased Epoxy Curing Agents ASEFAPI ddchem, a manufacturer of epoxy hardeners and resins, presents bio-based products, waterborne epoxy resin systems for ambient cured coatings and Sa-free alternative products with better yellowing resistance and reduced VOC content at the ASEFAPI technical conference.

Strategy to Achieve Climate Neutrality Goals

ddchem supports and is committed to implementing the use of bio-based raw materials in its products, believing them to be a necessary starting point for building a circular economy and achieving climate neutrality goals. ddchem is also committed to selecting bio-based raw materials that do not jeopardize the food supply chain.

Some of the sustainability benefits of bio-based products are:

  • Many bio-based products help reduce GHG emissions into the atmosphere as they absorb CO2 from the atmosphere during their life cycle (plants, trees etc). The amount of CO2 absorbed is retained in the material until the end of its life cycle
  • Many bio-based raw materials are produced from waste and/or renewable sources entering into a circular economy
  • Many bio-based products are produced from industrial waste that would otherwise be disposed of

ddchem determines the bio-based content of its products according to the method of analysis described in ASTM D6866. This method of analysis distinguishes carbon 14 derived from biomass from carbon 14 derived from fossil fuels. The measurement of renewable content through ASTM D6866 therefore only considers total organic carbon, not product weight.

WB Epoxy Resin Systems for Ambient Cured Coatings

In the last decades, waterborne epoxy resin systems for ambient cured coatings have attracted much attention due to new technologies and formulating experience.

Compared to their solvent-based counterparts, waterborne offer many advantages (reduced odor, not flammable, improved safety etc) and find space in many applications like protective coating, flooring applications (primer, self-levelling, top-coating) and civil engineering.

Waterborne epoxy systems normally feature excellent adhesion on various substrates like metal and concrete and they can also be used on humid or wet surfaces.

ddchem will present its four water-based curing agents that can cover different types of applications offering excellent performances in the field of flooring and protective coating. Starting formulations will be presented for clear coating and pigmented coating applications.

Sa-free Alternative Products

In the last years, many raw materials for coating applications have experienced a classification worsening causing the introduction of unwanted hazard statements in the SDS of the final products. ddchem regulatory department is always looking into new regulations that cause future classification changes.

Salicylic acid is an example as in May 2020 it acquired the hazard statement H361d: Suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child.

In 2019, ddchem was already offering Sa-free alternative products with equal physical and chemical properties, better yellowing resistance and reduced VOC content. At the present time, many ddchem customers have been able to easily use the new Sa-free alternatives.
