Bayer MaterialScience is the Supplier of Choice for Thick Film Coating Systems Proven to Overcome Challenging Installation Environments, End-Use Applications

PITTSBURGH -- Bayer's Baytec thick film coating solutions are a proven waterproofing and corrosion protection system, even for the most demanding conditions, such as wastewater and sanitation infrastructure applications.

Steven Reinstadtler, market channel manager, Spray Elastomers Group for Bayer MaterialScience, explains that manholes, digester tanks and concrete piping are under constant attack from sulfuric acid, which is secreted by a variety of thio bacteria that colonize on the walls of these wastewater structures. This quickly causes corrosion of exposed concrete and metal surfaces. Baytec SPR thick film coating systems mitigate this problem by effectively separating the acid from the surface that could be attacked. And because Baytec SPR spray systems have great acid and microbial resistance, they will continue to fight the battle against corrosion for years to come.

As an illustration of the company's proven spray coating solutions in these types of applications, Bayer MaterialScience announced that its Baytec SPR 092A thick film coating system has been utilized to protect wastewater treatment tanks in two recent projects.

The first project, for São Paulo, Brazil's Ajinomoto Biolatina Ltda., was completed in September 2005; the second, for Bayer's Belford Roxo, Brazil Polyurethane production facility, was completed one month later.

Bayer MaterialScience's Baytec SPR 092A thick film coating system has been utilized to protect wastewater treatment tanks for Ajinomoto Biolatina Ltda.

Bayer's Belford Roxo, Brazil Polyurethane production facility . Durocolor Industrial Ltda., based in São Paulo, applied Bayer's Baytec SPR 092A coating system for both projects.

Durocolor Industrial Ltda., based in São Paulo, applied Bayer's Baytec SPR 092A coating system for both projects. Durocolor has positioned themselves as a leader in the field of thick film coatings in the Brazilian market due to their coatings competence, attention to detail, and technical expertise. "We have found the Brazilian industrial sector to be very receptive to working with this high-performance thick film coatings technology. These industries are also very comfortable working with respected firms such as Durocolor and Bayer MaterialScience," said Durocolor's project director, Hamilton Nogueira.

Each project presented its own unique challenges, according to Reinstadtler.

The Ajinomoto Biolatina project called for the refurbishment of a 15-year-old tank that receives waste from the plant's steam production area. The condition of the concrete was poor: The tank had been painted with thin epoxy that was failing, and had some severely spalled areas. There was also some cracking and active water ingress. In preparation for the application of the Baytec spray system, Durocolor sanded all surfaces to achieve a sound and laitance-free concrete. An epoxy primer was applied and some patching was done to close small bugholes on the concrete.

In addition to the condition of the tank, the climatic conditions - unseasonably cool temperatures and an unfavorable dew point - presented additional challenges. Fortunately, Baytec SPR coating systems are easy to apply over a wide temperature range, according to Reinstadtler.

"Despite these demanding conditions, the Baytec system stayed sound, even with a slight water pressure from outside," said Reinstadtler, adding that the Baytec system was applied to 120 mils.

The project at Bayer MaterialScience's facility in Belford Roxo called for the application of the Baytec SPR 092A thick film coating system at 100 mils on two tanks that receive process waste from a secondary containment area.

In contrast to the previous project, the concrete for this project was just 30 days old. To prepare the surface, Durocolor trowelled on the primer, an epoxy formulated with a thixotropic compound, to cover bugholes from the poured concrete construction.

While the application of the Baytec spray system for the Ajinomoto Biolatina project took place during cool temperatures, the Belford Roxo project took place in a high-temperature environment (104 degrees Fahrenheit) that could have affected the curing of the primer, thereby potentially limiting the processing window and affecting adhesion. Again, the Baytec system's ability to be applied over a wide temperature range proved beneficial.

Additionally, because of the presence of sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid, as well as widely varying pH in the containment area, the spray system's chemical resistance was a key benefit for this application.

"As these recent projects illustrate, Baytec spray systems possess an outstanding combination of physical and chemical properties that make them an excellent choice for demanding environments around the world," explained Reinstadtler.
