'Akzo Nobel's Sikkens Autoclear UV' the clear winner at EQUIP AUTO

Sassenheim, the Netherlands -- Sikkens Autoclear UV, the new clearcoat of Akzo Nobel Car Refinishes, has won the International Grand Prix Award for Automotive Innovation at EQUIP AUTO 2007. EQUIP AUTO celebrates the best technological advances in vehicle and garage equipment.

This year's event, held in Paris in October, attracted over 100,000 visitors from around the world. Akzo Nobel received the Grand Prix Award for Automotive Innovation (garage equipment category), for its latest car refinish clearcoat, Sikkens Autoclear UV. The category was judged by a panel of 82 journalists from 28 countries. Offering an unprecedented combination of benefits - innovative technology, environmental advantages and greater bodyshop productivity - Sikkens Autoclear UV emerged as the clear winner.

Innovation in action

Every technological feature of Sikkens Autoclear UV delivers hard-working performance benefits.

Minutes shaved off every job: Revolutionary ultra-violet (UV) curing technology means that the clearcoat takes just six minutes to 'cure' or harden, while limited flash-off times minimise the time required for solvent evaporation beforehand. Curing starts as soon as the coated surface is exposed to UV light, and polishing is possible within 30 minutes.

Less energy consumed: A conventional clearcoat takes up to 25 minutes to cure using heat, plus about 10 minutes to heat and then cool the vehicle. UV curing brings considerable energy cost savings.

Adapts to different materials: Because no heat is involved, Sikkens Autoclear UV can be used on plastic as well as metal parts.

Everybody wins

Compared to conventional clearcoats, the economic and environmental advantages of the new clearcoat technology are undisputable:

  • Spray-booth throughput increases by up to 40%, maximising bodyshop investment
  • Energy consumption drops by up to 50% - good for the environment, and saving the average bodyshop up to 7,000 euros per year
  • Having a quicker, easier curing process levels out workflow peaks and troughs and improves operational flexibility
  • Bodyshop efficiency is increased thanks to shorter mixing and spraygun cleaning times
  • Material consumption reduced by 20-25%, and it can be used for several repairs - which means less wasted product, and less hazardous waste generated
  • VOC compliance: at 350g/l, the ready-to-spray mixture is well within EU and US VOC limits for clearcoats.

With its pioneering technology, Sikkens Autoclear UV is good news for bodyshops and the environment - and a worthy winner at EQUIP AUTO.
