Akzo Nobel Clinches 2MM Liter Coatings Deal

Published on 2002-05-22. Author : SpecialChem

Akzo Nobel's Coatings business has secured a major contract with Exmar, part of Belgium's largest shipping group, Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB).

Cross company teamwork from two International Paint organizations-IP Benelux and IP Korea-has resulted in the company being contracted to supply all the coatings for Exmar's newbuilding program at the Daewoo shipyard in Korea.

The order, which comprises two million liters of hi-tech coatings over four years, is CMB's first important newbuilding paint order in Korea since 1986.

The contract covers the building of five LNG carriers, which will be coated with Intershield 300 in all the water ballast tanks and Intersmooth Ecoloflex SPC antifouling on the underwater hull.

Said Patrick Janssens, Exmar's technical manager: "We were impressed by the long lasting record of Intershield and convinced of the technical properties of the Ecoloflex system. "International also provided us with additional value-added services that made the choice of their coatings even more appealing."

The five vessels being built have an overall length of 277 meters and are 43 meters wide. The first one will be delivered in August this year.
