A New, Highly-Functional Crosslinker for Sol-Gel Coatings from Bayer MaterialScience

Leverkusen -- With Bayresit® VPLS 2331, Bayer MaterialScience AG offers a new, highly-functional ethoxycarbosiloxane crosslinker tailor-made for the formulation of films and coatings using the sol-gel process. "Due to its flexible ring structure and high functionality, our new crosslinker imparts the coatings with high flexibility together with high hardness and scratch resistance - a rare and unusual combination of properties for sol-gel coatings," says Dr. Arno Nennemann, an expert at Bayer MaterialScience's Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants Business Unit. There are considerable openings for this product in easy-to-clean and anti-graffiti coatings, in corrosion protection and in ceramic materials.

Test sheets with sol-gel coatings: in standard sol gel coatings (R), the marked shrinkage associated with thicker coatings results in cracks. This is not the case with sol gel coatings based on Bayresit® VPLS 2331 (L), which exhibit very little shrinkage.

Moderate curing temperatures, low shrinkage

The oligomer liquid crosslinker exhibits a storage stability of more than one year and can also be used for the formulation of coatings modified with nanoparticles. Sol-gel systems formulated with Bayresit® VPLS 2331 exhibit very little shrinkage during thermal curing, making thicker coatings possible. This is also a decisive advantage with respect to processing properties. Furthermore, the curing parameters feature short, economical curing times and moderate temperatures compared to other sol-gel systems. In the case of heat-sensitive substrates, the sol-gel system can also be cured over an extended period at room temperature thanks to the high reactivity of the crosslinker.

Highly crosslinked inorganic coatings - flexible and transparent

Bayresit® VPLS 2331 can be combined with metal alkoxides and silanes to produce flexible sol-gel films that are transparent. In addition to high scratch and abrasion resistance, such highly crosslinked inorganic coatings also exhibit pronounced resistance to solvents and acids. If formulated accordingly, the cured coatings also have a strongly anti-adhesive surface, making them suitable for use as easy-to-clean and anti-graffiti paints. Their hydrophobic character also makes them suitable for use in corrosion protection applications.

Inorganic-organic hybrid coatings

Bayresit® VPLS 2331 can also be combined with organic coating materials to produce hybrid coatings whose film properties combine the strengths of organic and inorganic sol-gel coatings. The result is interpenetrating networks of both components. "This allows us to synthesize one and two-component hybrid coatings with enhanced microhardness and improved resistance to chemicals and acids," says Nennemann.

The new crosslinker can also be used in ceramic materials, where the combination of low shrinkage, high reactivity and high crosslinking density typical of Bayresit® VPLS 2331 together with improved ductility opens up new possibilities.
