Zircotec's Carbon Composite Coating Technology Used for Bicycle Wheel Brakes

Cycling Plus Magazine (Feb. issue) reports on yet another application of Zircotec's carbon composite coating technology - a novel braking surface for use on carbon composite bicycle wheels offering a step change in brake performance, especially in the wet.

The team at Cycling Plus commented that braking on carbon rims in the wet is "usually mildly terrifying." They road tested a set of Zircotec coated carbon wheels over a period of several weeks, riding on the wheels through both wet and dry conditions. They found that braking in the dry was generally smooth, though a bit harsher than aluminium rims. They commented that in wet conditions it took only "a little longer to slow down than in the dry." These findings support our own test results, and are similar to the conclusions from an increasing range of independent test work.

Zircotec is currently working with a number of wheel manufacturers and distributors to determine how the technology can be integrated into their manufacture and supply chains. "Our aim is to select one or more partners who will utilize the carbon-ceramic braking technology to manufacture and supply their own pre-treated carbon wheels. Our discussions are progressing quite quickly, there are a number of pre-production rims on test and we hope to see the first production rims on sale in 2011" comments Terry Graham, MD of Zircotec.
