SunDensity Lab Photonic Smart Coating Utility Solar Power SunDensity is set to open its R&D lab and headquarters in Sibley Square downtown. The business produces photonic smart coating for utility solar power producers that enhances optical processes and reduces the cost of energy.

SunDensity had been in temporary space in the building but made an investment, including site enhancements as well as new equipment in the new location.

Cost Reduction in Solar Industry

The company’s smart coating converts light into electricity more efficiently than the current methods in the marketplace,” said Nishikant Sonwalkar, founder, president and chief technology officer, SunDensity.

The smart coating can also reduce the cost of production, which could then, in turn, enable the widespread adoption of solar energy to reduce carbon emissions. We have a very innovative, out-of-the-box approach,” added Sonwalkar, noting the local pilot plant could be replicated in other locations closer to customers as the company grows.

In addition to R&D, there will be pilot manufacturing at the location. The market is dynamic, yet commoditized and SunDensity is mindful about keeping its costs in check,” said Henry Schek, chief executive officer, SunDensity.

He estimates it will take up to three years to commercialize the technology and anticipates having a full-scale manufacturing operation somewhere in the Rochester area.

This technology may be a game changer, but we still have to keep our business ducks in a row,” added Schek.
