LANSING, Ill., Sept. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Rohm and Haas Automotive Coatings broke ground yesterday for a new 46,000 square foot Technical Research Center to be completed in mid-2003. The new facility will be located at 2500 East 170th Street in Lansing, two blocks away from the existing Automotive Coatings facility, which will remain in operation. The company will invest $12-$15 million in the new facility.

Reggie Horne, Vice President and Business Unit Director for Automotive Coatings, said the center, "signals our continued commitment to providing innovative technology to the automotive industry, and to remaining a strong participant in the Lansing community."

The new facility will include a state-of-the-art automotive coatings trial line that will allow the business to demonstrate the strength of its product technology and expertise on-site for both current and potential customers - Finishers who provide painted plastic parts for passenger car, SUV and light truck manufacturers. The trial line will include a power wash station, an applications stage, and a thermal finishing unit to simulate typical auto parts finishing lines found at customer operations. "The line will allow us to demonstrate the characteristics of our products which make them stand out from competitive offerings -- physical properties which give our coatings the toughness and weatherability needed for today's vehicles, as well as the quality of the finish our coatings bring to the finished vehicle."

Rohm and Haas's Automotive Coatings business formulates, manufactures and markets coatings for plastic "add on" automotive parts, such as bumpers, side moldings and spoilers, to car manufacturers around the world. This business has grown from modest beginnings into a thriving business which reported sales of approximately $100 million last year.
