Raleigh Coatings Invests to Expand its Silicone Gel Adhesive Coating Line for Healthcare Sector

Published on 2012-12-11. Author : SpecialChem

Raleigh Coatings, the UK's leading specialists in medical adhesive coatings, has made a £500,000 investment to build a new Class 7 clean-room facility complete with a dedicated silicone gel adhesive coating line, in response to growing demand for its coating services from the healthcare sector.

The new and bespoke silicone gel contract coating line at the company's production facility and head quarters in Staffordshire, delivers high quality adhesive coatings undertaken to clean-room standards which meet ISO 14644 Class 7.

In the planning since 2010, construction of the new facility and commissioning of the new bespoke 'three zone' clean line realises an investment for the £5.0M turnover company of in excess of £500,000.

The new line, the third for Raleigh, will initially operate eight hours a day, five days a week, with plans to increase production to 24/7. It is capable of producing over one million metre square of adhesive coated products per annum.

Already established as a leader in silicone gel, solvent and aqueous based adhesive coatings, Raleigh works extensively in the field of medical adhesive coating and is a specialist contract coater in the sector.

The company offers a lab-bench through to final production service for silicone gel, aqueous and solvent based coatings, and currently works with many blue-chip medical organisations to deliver a bespoke, cost effective and speedy service. It is one of a few organizations in the UK to offer a specialist 'pilot line' facility, to enable customers to 'test' coatings for new or improved products in production conditions but at a fraction of the cost and reduced turnaround times, prior to moving to full production.

As Raleigh's General Manager Peter Turton explains, the new clean line represents a significant step for Raleigh: "Clean-room contract coating is a highly specialised production service and our healthcare sector customers have grown to depend on Raleigh for our exacting, reliable, frequently bespoke, and always fast, contamination-free standards of production.

"In response to sustained growth in demand for this service, Raleigh has designed this new, comprehensive silicone gel production facility, which incorporates the most efficient, and effective clean-room features, production technology and expertise, to substantially increase our capacity."

Initially, the new line will be operated by Raleigh's existing, highly trained and skilled team, which has extensive experience of working alongside medical organizations on developing bespoke medical standard silicone gel, solvent and aqueous adhesive coatings for medical items including wound dressings for the healthcare industry. The company has plans to create more skilled jobs.

As Raleigh's Business Development Manager, Julian Watkins explains: "Medical organizations have to know they are working with suppliers that understand the high standards of clinical cleanliness necessary for their products. This new clean-line demonstrates not only this understanding, but also our commitment to matching, indeed exceeding, these standards, with an adhesive coating facility designed and constructed to address and guarantee these critical production standards.

"Incorporating an integrated high clean preparation and production environment, the new building has been ergonomically designed," adds Julian, "and achieves its clinically contamination-free standards by utilizing walls, fixtures and fittings frequently seen in hygienic food production areas."

As well as working alongside medical organizations, Raleigh operates in the specialist label, security and aerospace sectors, with UK and global customers, for a wide range of industries, including automotive, building, electronics and graphics, on small to large-scale runs.
