WUXI, China -- PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG) supported the Auto Body Painting Contest portion of the 2013 "Chevrolet Cup" National Automotive Application and Repair Skills Competition. The competition took place at the Secondary Vocational School of Automotive Engineering in Wuxi, China, and it is the fifth consecutive year that PPG has supported this event.

Hosted jointly by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Communications and the Jiangsu Municipal Government, and sponsored by the National Transportation Vocational Education Steering Committee, China Automotive Maintenance Industry Association, Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education and Wuxi Municipal Government, the event attracted 450 secondary vocational school students from all over the country who are studying automotive application and repair skills. It is the largest competition for automotive repair skills held in China.

Since being named co-organizer of this competition by the Ministry of Education in 2009, PPG has supported the event by assisting in the rule-making and organization of the contest. As the only sponsor of automotive refinish products for the event, PPG also provides all coatings products for contestants.

"The Auto Body Painting Contest offers a good arena for budding professionals to showcase their prowess in spray painting and for PPG to show its commitment to the development of China's automotive refinish industry," said Pauline Yuen, PPG Vice President, refinish coatings and light industrial coatings, Asia. "As China's automotive industry increases the use of waterborne coatings, we expect to see professionals specializing in waterborne painting next year, demonstrating that vocational education in automotive refinish is keeping pace with the needs of the industry."

PPG initiated a school-enterprise cooperative program in China in 2004 to share its leading technologies and training systems for automotive refinish and support local vocational education programs. In early 2011, PPG signed a school-enterprise cooperative agreement with the Ministry of Education, marking the official inauguration of occupational training for automotive coatings in China. So far, PPG has signed cooperative agreements with 17 vocational schools across the country.

Due to the high demand for talented refinish painter in China, PPG opened an upgraded Shanghai Training Center in May 2012. The 3,000-square-meter training center is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. Along with established PPG training centers in Beijing, Guangzhou and Chengdu, the new Shanghai facility provides enhanced training opportunities for technicians from Chinese customers such as automotive manufacturers, auto service centers and car dealers.
