Nippon Paint Architectural Coatings Purify Urban Air Nippon Paint China reach a strategic cooperation with the School of Resources and Environmental Engineering of East China University of Science and Technology and the School of Physics and Electronic Science of East China Normal University and signs a contract to establish a ‘photocatalytic purification coating technology innovation platform’, aiming to promote photocatalysis.

Purify paint technology innovation and application exploration to create industry-university-research integration innovation model in the paint industry. Taking this cooperation as an opportunity, the three parties will jointly develop future efficient solutions to control urban air pollution, commit to improving the living environment and accelerate the construction of a beautiful China.

Green Transformation of Coatings Industry

Under the guidance of the dual-carbon strategy and local environmental protection policies, the energy saving and emission reduction of architectural coatings is the general trend. With the steady advancement of the national ‘3060’ dual-carbon strategy, ‘green and low-carbon’ has increasingly become an important criterion for building cities and human settlements.

Under the influence of multiple policies, the green transformation of the coatings industry has entered the fast lane and building a green building materials industry chain and building green buildings has become a must for the high-quality development of the architectural coatings industry.

"The improvement of the urban ecological environment lies not only in 'governance', but also in 'prevention'. The control of air pollutants should give priority to the use of alternative measures at the source. The control of VOCs from industrial sources is very important,” said Xiu Guangli, professor at the School of Resources and Environmental Engineering of East China University of Science and Technology.

The renewal of coating technology on the exterior wall interface of buildings is one of the entry points for reducing VOCs in cities. At present, we see that the coatings industry is reducing VOCs of raw materials. Some progress has been made in this area and efforts will continue to be made on the VOCs purification mechanism based on low- VOC materials," added Guangli.

Photocatalytic Purification Coating Technology

Based on cutting-edge environmental protection technology and material research, Nippon Paint explores the application of photocatalytic purification coating technology.

Nippon Paint firmly responds to the industry's green development trend and has a keen insight into the industrialization prospects of cutting-edge environmental protection technologies in the field of architectural coatings and actively explores the application of photocatalytic purification technology in the field of coatings.

"After more than 20 years of in-depth research on photocatalyst materials, we are very pleased to see the combination of photocatalytic technology and coating technology,” said Professor Sun Zhuo, professor at the School of Physics and Electronic Sciences of East China Normal University and academician of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Materials Sciences.

Photocatalysis

Photocatalysis refers to the oxidation-reduction reaction generated by the catalyst under the irradiation of a light source of a specific wavelength (such as ultraviolet light), which can achieve the effects of purifying air, anti-pollution and deodorization. As a kind of photocatalyst material, nanocrystalline titanium has green, safe and high-efficiency performance.

At the same time, it can help purify VOCs in the construction field, realize air purification, organic matter degradation, sterilization and disinfection, etc.

At present, nanocrystalline titanium, as a photocatalyst material, has been applied in the research and development of Nippon Paint's photocatalytic purification coating technology.

The latest laboratory tests show that Nippon Paint's photocatalytic purification coating technology has the effects of removing formaldehyde, removing odor, anti-bacteria, and anti-virus on interior wall coatings, and can efficiently purify nitrogen oxides on exterior wall coatings, with a 2-hour nitrogen dioxide removal rate It can reach more than 80%.

Innovative Technology Platform

"Nippon Paint's vision is to build the most valuable ecological platform with technology. It is driving the coating industry forward through its own technological innovation. At the same time, the ‘strong combination’ of industry-university-research forces can further accelerate the industrial application and promotion of innovative technologies," said Dr. Cai Yongyue, president of Nippon Paint China TU Product Technology Center.

"We look forward to provide innovative solutions for the development of environmental purification coating products through Nippon Paint's photocatalytic purification coating technology, so that every city can become an ecological city," added Dr. Yongyue.

To promote the innovation and development of the coatings industry, Nippon Paint and universities jointly build an innovative technology platform for the integration of production, learning and research.

Double Carbon Goal

"The photocatalytic purification coating technology innovation platform released by Nippon Paint this time has set up a good example for coating companies in innovation practice model,” said Liu Pujun, president of the China Coatings Industry Association.

The association hopes that more paint companies, like Nippon Paint, will make further efforts in the combination of production, learning, research and application and the development and application of green paint space technology, to promote the green and high-quality development of China's paint industry and to help the realization of the national double carbon goal," added Pujun.

In the future, Nippon Paint will conduct in-depth R&D and industrial practice around photocatalytic purification coating technology with two universities and promote its wide application in the fields of coatings and environmental purification.

"Adhering to the corporate vision of 'using technology to build the most valuable ecological platform’, Nippon Paint has always believed in the value of ecological empowerment,” said Zhonglin Zhonglin, chief executive officer of Nippon Paint China.

We hope that through this cooperation, the core path of technology, talents and industry will be opened up, so that technological innovation, talent training and industrial application will be linked together and a green future will be created for the coatings industry," added Zhonglin.
