Nano-Scientists Develop New Method to Reduce Organic Dyes from Environment

TEHRAN (INIC) -- Researchers at Materials and Energy Research Center (MERC), Iran, recently found a technique for elimination of environmentally harmful organic dyes.

Dyes and paints are of highly demanded chemical products that ultimately enter the environment through many ways. Accordingly, a method to alleviate such a challenge is strongly sought after.

"Our goal in this research effort was to demonstrate the catalytic activity of titanium oxide nanopowder," Azarmidokht Hosseinnia, a member of academic board at Materials and Energy Research Center (MERC), explained to the news service of the INIC.

"To fulfill the goal, titanium oxide was prepared through precipitation of titanium chloride in dilute ammonium-isopropanol solution. Next, the resulted precipitate was dehydrated by benzene azeotropic distillation," she added, saying, "After calcination, the obtained powder was consisted of approximately uniform nanocrystals. Subsequently, 6 organic dye samples of different chromophores in either a mixture of methanol and water or water alone were subject to sunlight while their degradation rate was investigated."

The results of this research indicate that different organic dyes, having various chromophores, would degrade at different rates in presence of TiO2 nanoparticles (with dimensions less than 25 nm) while sunlight by itself suffices such degradation.
