Merck to Exhibit isishape® & Solarpur® AR Coatings Materials at EPSEC, Hamburg

Published on 2011-09-05. Author : SpecialChem

DARMSTADT -- Merck KGaA will be exhibiting its latest material developments for the photovoltaic industry at the 26th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition in Hamburg, Germany from September 5-8, 2011.

At the exhibition, Merck will present the latest developments to its isishape® product line. The unique concept behind isishape® offers environmentally friendly and highly efficient materials for smart and simple structuring in the photovoltaic industry. Under the brand name isishape®, Merck has developed printable etching pastes capable of selectively etching antireflective coatings (e.g. SiNx) and passivation layers (e.g. SiO2 or AlOx) on solar cells as well as on transparent conductive materials (e.g. ITO). Having enabled the first mass production of highly efficient selective emitter cells in 2009, Merck isishape® materials are regularly used for this application by various leading solar cell manufacturers. Innovative isishape® technology is also showing tremendous potential for developing highly productive new concepts for silicon cells such as MWT (Metal Wrap Through) and LBSF (Local Back Surface Field) as well as for an efficient process for edge isolation. Merck's isishape® SolarResist™ is the first ink-jet compatible solution for direct printing of a silicon dioxide diffusion barrier.

Merck also will present the first large-size glass-based DSSC prototype panel incorporating Merck Solarpur® materials. The screen-printed 60x100cm sized module has been manufactured by Fraunhofer ISE and reflects the current technology status of the results achieved in the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) project: "Scalable dye-sensitized solar cells - Development of new electrolytes for dye-sensitized solar cells with long-term stability".

Supporting the commercial development of DSSC technology, Merck will introduce their DSSC electrolytes under the tradename "livion™". The Merck livion™ DSSC electrolytes incorporate Merck's high-quality Solarpur® single materials or Merck chemicals treated in accordance with Solarpur® standards. Merck provides customers with DSSC electrolytes based on public information, in-house developments or as customized mixtures exclusively developed together and for its partners. Merck livion™ electrolytes are DSSC-dedicated electrolytes consisting of solvents, ionic liquids or a combination of both in addition to other components.

Merck also commercializes antireflex coatings for solar modules under the Solarpur® brand.

In addition, Merck offers the following products for a wide variety of solar cells:

  • lisicon®: organic semiconducting polymers for organic solar cells
  • livilux®: advanced organic charge transport materials for dye-sensitized and organic solar cells
  • The 5th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion will be held from September 5 to 9 in parallel to the exhibition, which runs from September 5 to 8. This conference, which unites three major photovoltaic conferences this year, will feature presentations of the latest scientific developments in the photovoltaics field. Together with the concurrent exhibition, the event offers a superb overview of product innovations in this field and a high-level platform for information exchanges among specialists.

The European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition is one of the world's major solar exhibitions and conferences, and among these it traditionally has the most visitors. This year the organizer expects about 950 exhibitors from more than 100 countries and over 40,000 visitors. An additional 4,000 participants are expected to attend the world conference taking place simultaneously.
