Meeting the Need for Fire Safety: Clariant Showcases New Retardant Coatings Range at Fire India 2009

MUMBAI, India -- With the significant growth in the construction industry in India comes a burden of responsibility often overlooked in the headlines - the fire safety standards of new buildings. So what is on the market to help manufacturers of building materials meet this pressing need?

Clariant International, with its Indian partner Clariant Chemicals (India) Ltd, showcased its latest products in fire retardants at Fire India 2009, at the Bombay Exhibition Centre on 7-9 September, 2009. Of particular interest is the Clariant's range of intumescent coatings (IC) technology, which protects open steel structures in the event of fire.

Exolit® AP grades are an essential ingredient in high quality IC. These products are non-halogenated materials which meet all key toxicological and ecological requirements, and formulations with them can satisfy common international fire protection classifications for IC systems.

In addition to the Exolit® AP range, Exolit® OP is a non-halogenated flame retardant that offers a pioneering product series for the effective fire protection of polyamides and polyesters. "The phosphinate-based system offers numerous benefits. Even in low dosages, the highly effective, non-halogenated system complies with the most stringent fire protection classifications and key electrical standards. Its ecological compatibility and recyclability have been scientifically proven," says Sambit Roy, Marketing, Specialties Business, Clariant Chemicals (India) Ltd.

The flame retardant system is compatible with the EU Directives WEEE and RoHS. In addition to the main fields of application in fiberglass-reinforced polyamides and polyesters, the new generation of flame retardants has also shown its effectiveness in printed circuit boards based on FR-4 laminates, adhesives, sealants, and epoxy laminates. Thanks to their low density, the flame retardants can also be used for lightweight construction composite materials.
