Material Protection from LANXESS for Paints, Varnishes and Coatings

Published on 2009-04-03. Author : SpecialChem

The Material Protection Products business unit (MPP) of specialty chemicals company LANXESS AG has an extensive range of biocides for the paint and varnish industry. At the European Coatings Show 2009, LANXESS presented new and proven products to the professional public in combination with a full range of services. "We offer customers over 100 years of experience," says Torsten Derr, Head of the Material Protection Products business unit. "The technical expertise we've acquired during this time, and our knowledge of regulatory practices, are the best prerequisites for our service, also in terms of registration and approval. We are in an excellent position to cope with the various changes taking place in the regulatory sector, be it the European Biocidal Products Directive or FIFRA registration in the United States."

Microorganisms, such as mold fungi, and also bacteria, can attack and break down virtually all materials. They use materials consisting mostly of organic substances as a source of food. Furthermore, fungi and their hyphae, for example, can penetrate cracks and pores to destroy a material mechanically. Microorganisms therefore are a major factor contributing to material decomposition. Products from LANXESS, however, preserve the value of materials and the beauty of fine surfaces.

In-can preservatives marketed by LANXESS, for use in liquid, aqueous products, offer a broad spectrum of microbicidal action and prevent attack by microorganisms, particularly bacteria, fungi and yeasts. Moreover, they are extremely cost-efficient to use. Preventol formulations containing no volatile organic compounds (VOC) or formaldehyde are also available.

Dry-film preservatives maintain not only the aesthetic value, but also the physical integrity of a coating, which is indispensable for preserving the key properties of paint, varnish or plaster, such as water resistance or adhesion to a given substrate. LANXESS offers VOC-free aqueous dispersions, based on zinc pyrithione, octyl-isothiazolinone and diuron, for example, which display both fungicidal and algicidal action. The balanced formulations permit efficient dry-film preservation while optimally exploiting the limits of labeling for the respective active substances. At the European Coatings Congress, being held during the trade show, Dr. Frank Sauer, head of Technical Marketing Paint & Coatings, will be presenting a paper on "The role of diuron as highly efficient dry-film preservative in view of the Biocidal Products Directive."

The Material Protection Products business unit further markets a comprehensive range of biocides and biocidal formulations for wood preservatives that protect wood against attack by wood-discoloring fungi, mold and/or insects. LANXESS offers a whole portfolio of solventborne and waterborne systems for the fungicidal treatment of wood paints and varnishes. In line with the trend towards waterborne systems, LANXESS is working continuously to expand its portfolio of corresponding biocidal formulations. As an improvement on the IPBC-based Preventol MP line, LANXESS now markets Preventol C 20-D and Preventol C 30. These VOC-free, pumpable dispersions display a broad spectrum of action and improved efficacy. The range of wood primers and impregnating agents has been expanded to include innovative insecticide formulations from the Preventol TX line, even small doses of which effectively protect wood against wood-destroying insects.

The fields of application for biocides even include antifouling coatings used to protect ship hulls against soft fouling organisms. LANXESS markets Preventol A 5-S for this sector, a cobiocide that shows outstanding efficacy against macroalgae, slime producers and other fouling organisms. This cobiocide also offers the advantage of breaking down very rapidly in ocean water.

The Material Protection Products business unit belongs to LANXESS's Performance Chemicals segment, which achieved total sales of EUR 1,930 million in fiscal 2008.
