Glasurit paints and graffiti decorate tram in Zwickau, Germany

Münster/Zwickau -- A special trio is honoring composer Robert Schumann, Zwickau, Germany's native son. He is being commemorated by the design of a tram depicting scenes from his life and work. In addition to the application surface, the tram, the trio also consists of the Glasurit® paints used for the finish and the graffiti colors applied. It turned out to be a sight worth seeing.

Inspired by Romantic composer Robert Schumann's music and life, the two artists Swen Gerisch and Heiko Rank of the association "Kontraste e.V." had a goal: to immortalize Robert and Clara Schumann on a tram. Before this could happen, however, quite a bit of basic work and research needed to be done. How would the Glasurit® products that were used for priming and later for the final finish react to the graffiti paints and vice versa? That was a tantalizing question for everyone involved - the artists, the professional automotive painters, and the Glasurit® experts. Together they developed and tested a technical concept that included selecting materials. By the way, the tram with the dazzling design was officially presented by German actor and cabaret performer Wolfgang Stumph in an event that attracted much attention.

The painting concept

Glasurit® experts, along with the artists and professional automotive painters, developed an optimal solution for painting the tram. Precleaning was carried out using Glasurit® 541-5 Wax and Silicone Remover. The surface was sanded using random orbital sanders with 140-grit paper. Then another cleaning step followed using Wax and Silicone Remover plus a tack rag. Glasurit® 284-14 VOC 1 (applied in one spraycoat) was used for priming. The topcoat was applied wet-on-wet to the primer coat using ivory 68 Line paint. Afterward the paintwork was dried, sanded with 360-grit paper and then cleaned using a tack rag.

For the graffiti design, four artists worked for a total of two weeks. Once the work of art was completed, the tram was cleaned by wet sanding with 800-grit paper. In the final step, the paintwork was treated with Wax and Silicone Remover once more before two wet spraycoats of Glasurit® HS Clear VOC 3.5 were applied to protect the graffiti design.
