Emerald Kalama Chemical Appoints Herbst as Marketing Director to Leverage Global Opportunities for K-Flex® Plasticizers & Coalescents

Emerald Kalama Chemical, a business group of Emerald Performance Materials, announced that Wendy Herbst has joined the group as Director of Marketing for the K-FLEX® platform. In this new position for the company, Herbst will be responsible for identifying initiatives for strategic growth, developing and updating market strategies and coordinating activities across all functional areas to execute global initiatives.

Herbst has gained more than 12 years of experience in marketing, market development and sales for the industrial and specialty materials industry. Most recently, she served as Global Segment Leader and Pricing Process Lead at Arizona Chemical, where she was responsible for company-wide pricing strategy, as well as business management and marketing of chemical intermediates and thermoplastic pavement marking. She also previously held roles with Eastman and The Sherwin-Williams Company. She holds an M.B.A. in Marketing from the University of Phoenix and a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin.

“Wendy has shown that she has the expertise to precisely identify key opportunities and coordinate strategy to leverage them from a marketing standpoint,” said Shamsi Gravel, vice president of the K-FLEX® business. “With her experience and insight, she will be a valuable asset in helping the K-FLEX® platform grow worldwide.”

The Emerald Kalama business group has more than doubled U.S. capacity for K-FLEX® plasticizers and coalescents since 2011, completing several expansion projects at its Kalama, Wash. facility. The group has also made several large investments in the last two years to increase the footprint of the brand internationally, including a new global technical center in Kalama and a K-FLEX® operation at the group's Rotterdam, Netherlands facility.

K-FLEX® benzoate technology has a proven track record of more than three decades delivering performance and proving it is a highly effective alternative that avoids the health and environmental concerns of increasingly regulated phthalate plasticizers and high-VOC coalescents. The REACH-compliant K-FLEX® platform provides a range of non-phthalate, non-SVHC products, including those with certain clearances for use in food-contact applications.

In recent years, the company has focused on product innovation to deliver benefits to an expanding range of adhesives, sealants, caulks, paints, coatings, graphic arts and plastisol and vinyl applications. For example, in adhesive and sealant applications, K-FLEX® products are known for enhancing film formation and adhesion, maximizing processing characteristics and improving the resistance of the end-product to oil, grease and water. Other important benefits include improved scrub resistance and gloss retention in paint and coatings. In vinyl applications, performance can be greatly enhanced by blending the fast-fusing K-FLEX® plasticizers with many other general purpose plasticizers to increase line speed and/or lower processing temperature, as well as improve stain resistance and toughen wear layers in plastisols.

Emerald Kalama Chemical also produces sodium and potassium benzoate, benzoic acid and intermediates and specialty flavor and fragrance ingredients, which the company sells globally through its distribution partners. The business has manufacturing operations in Kalama, Wash. and in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
