Midland, MI -- The Dow Chemical Company and its affiliates ("Dow") have announced price increases for acrylic acid and esters, also known as acrylic monomers or acrylates, effective September 1, 2007, or as otherwise allowed by individual contract terms. Dow will increase off-schedule prices globally as follows:

Butyl Acrylate/2-Ethylhexyl Acrylate:

  • in North America by $0.05 per pound

  • in Asia Pacific by US$110 per metric ton

  • in Middle East/Africa by US$110 per metric ton

  • in Latin America by US$110 per metric ton

  • in Europe by 80 Euros per metric ton

Ethyl Acrylate/Methyl Acrylate/Glacial Acrylic Acid:

  • in North America by US$0.03 per pound

  • in Asia Pacific by US$70 per metric ton

  • in Middle East/Africa by US$70 per metric ton

  • in Latin America by US$70 per metric ton

  • in Europe by 50 Euros per metric ton.

"The price for propylene, a key raw material, has increased 30% over the last seven months and has outpaced our ability to implement price increases, thus severely compressing our margins," explained Mark Bassett, global business director for the Acrylic Monomers business of The Dow Chemical Company. "Our margins are being squeezed and some key alcohols and the resulting acrylates have gotten tight. This action is necessary to help offset the increase on propylene and other key raw materials we are seeing in the marketplace and to enable Dow to continue to be a reliable supplier.

Dow is one of the world's largest participants in the acrylic acid and esters (acrylic monomers or acrylates) marketplace, with a complete portfolio of acrylate materials that provide selection, quality and consistency for a wide range of applications. Acrylic Monomers are used in dispersions and emulsions for adhesives, coatings, inks, woven and non-woven textiles, plastics and polymers and superabsorbent products.
