Degussa AG's Coatings & Colorants Business Unit launched its expansion of isophorone production in Herne with a cornerstone laying ceremony. On February 17, 2006, Prof. Dr. Utz-Hellmuth Felcht, chairman of Degussa's Management Board; Dr. Manfred Spindler, Management Board member responsible for the Specialty Materials reporting segment; and Dr. Hans-Peter Schaufler, head of the Coatings & Colorants Business Unit, welcomed a large number of guests from the worlds of politics and business to the Herne site for the formal laying of the cornerstone. "All in all, the Herne site has received investment appropriations in the three-digit million euro range in the last few years. This shows that Degussa is planning something big in Herne," said Prof. Felcht.

Degussa AG will expand its entire isophorone chemicals production line at the Herne site. Isophorone and its derivatives are used in many different areas. The derivatives isophorone diamine and isophorone diisocyanate are produced from isophorone over several reaction stages and are sold by Degussa under the trade names VESTAMIN® and VESTANAT®. VESTAMIN® is used in, for example, solvent-free coatings for industrial flooring, and VESTANAT® in the production of light- and weather-stable automotive paints and high-quality parts for automotive interiors. The basic product, isophorone, is used as a special solvent.

The unit is scheduled to begin operating in the year 2007. The expansion involves an investment in the high double-digit million euro range. "The new units are yet another milestone for Herne," says Schaufler, "and proof of Degussa's confidence in this production site."

Through its Coatings & Colorants Business Unit, Degussa is the global market leader in all stages of isophorone chemistry. The company already operates three production lines, one in Mobile, Alabama, and two at the Herne site, where some 350 people work. Apart from safeguarding existing jobs in Herne, the new units will allow the creation of several dozen direct and indirect jobs at the site.
