CPS Color Invests to Increase Colorant Production by 40 Percent

Published on 2011-02-02. Author : SpecialChem

CPS Color has increased its capacities for colorant production by nearly 40 percent, investing 3.5 million Euros both in the supply chain and in research and development facilities at several sites. The move supports CPS Color's position as the global leader in solvent-free colorant production and a technology leader in the solvent containing colorant market. The investment ensures consistent quality and efficient delivery of colorants at all times, including during peak demand periods. Total production capacity will increase from 9.700K liters up to 13.500K liters company-wide.

The investment follows CPS Color's rapid growth, which has averaged 10 percent over the past few years. By increasing capacity at production facilities, CPS Color can now satisfy demand during the peak demand period between April and August without needing to pre-produce and hold large stocks of colorant inventory. "For both us and our clients, it is vitally important to be able to react to market demands speedily and flexibly," says Martijn Kunnen, Head of Sales CE Europe. "The greatest asset we have in our business is reliability: our customers need to know that we can deliver consistently high-quality colorants in any quantity at any time."

Colorant sales make up about 60 percent of CPS Color's overall business. Unlike other colorant competitors, CPS offers a complete line of products to support each stage of the tinting process. The CPS Color tinting portfolio includes: CPS Color™ colorants (liquid pigments), COROB™ dispensing, mixing and shaking equipment, software and color marketing tools.

Better quality at higher speeds

At the Sittard facility in The Netherlands, the latest technology upgrades include flame-proof immersion mills that deliver outstanding product quality at speeds up to three times faster than traditional mills. A newly equipped filling line will also dramatically increase efficiency by allowing continuous work in two shifts and a 2,500-liter dissolver completes the set-up. Additional supply chain investments were made at the CPS Color's Vantaa, Finland and the Shanghai, China production facilities.

Timely interaction between CPS Color and their customers has also been improved by doubling the size of the laboratory in Sittard to accommodate both customer support and research & development under one roof.

Solvent-free colorants for a greener future

Staying at the cutting edge of research and development is key to CPS Color's success: with nearly 50 percent of their colorants being solvent-free, CPS Color is today the leading producer of environmentally responsible colorant products. Unlike glycol-based colorants, solvent-free products are vulnerable to bacteria or molds and demonstrate different rheological properties. Thanks to the company's 20 years of experience with solvent-free colorants, CPS Color produces high-quality products that are continually monitored to exceed the highest specifications. On-going work to make water-based colorants as robust as their glycol-containing counterparts lies at the heart of CPS Color's research and development activity.

Meanwhile, global demand for water-based colorants is set to grow. European law now tightly regulates colorants, banning solvent-based products altogether for the decorative painting industry within the EU. While there is no such law in the US, CPS Color expects a growing demand from North America as environmental concerns gain momentum in society. "The US market is driven more by marketing than by legislation," observed Jeroen Hofman, Colorant Product Manager. "Once US consumers get used to taking a close look at the can before purchasing a product, paint producers will start looking to suppliers that can deliver high-quality solvent-free products. This is a good opportunity for CPS Color to increase its market share in North America."

CPS Color has recently established a Colorant Lab in Concord, North Carolina capable of assisting customers with system selection, customized product evaluation, and database creation. The team is now fully staffed with a Technical Manager and dedicated Sales Team to take advantage of the growing trend toward environmental responsibility and apply CPS Color's global expertise in Low VOC colorants to meet the changing demands of the US market.

Global research for local markets

Setting up business abroad requires careful preparation. CPS Color runs a number of Competence Centers across the world which jointly carry out the company's research and development activities. "Being present in different parts of the world is vital because local markets differ greatly. Access to local technical resources allows CPS Color to optimize the performance of our products to meet regionally specific needs." says Jonas Fagerström, Global R&D Director at CPS Color.

The company has recently opened a Competence Center in Mumbai, India, which has a special focus on colorant and equipment interaction. Additionally, the Mumbai lab will research the vast array of available raw materials to determine their viability, quality and performance characteristics. This will ensure a steady supply of critical ingredients as access to certain resources is changeable in our global economy.

Fagerström believes, the team in Mumbai to be unique in the industry, combining Research and Development resources of three key disciplines including color chemistry, equipment engineering and software design. This Competence Center will not only support the expansion of CPS Color's colorant production into one of the largest markets in the world; it will provide a catalyst for new product development and ensure CPS Color's long-term global success.
