Covestro at ACS 2016: to Deliver Presentation on Polyiscocyanates & Polyols for PU Coatings

Published on 2016-04-08. Author : SpecialChem

PITTSBURGH -- Polyurethane coatings continue to evolve to meet increased market demands for quality, durability, sustainability and aesthetics for a variety of applications. With more than 75 years of experience in polyurethane chemistry research and development, Covestro offers a comphensive line of polyurethane raw materials for the production of high-performance, high-quality polyurethane coatings. This range of raw materials creates many formulation options for waterborne, solventborne, low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) or even coatings without solvents. Two Covestro experts will be sharing their knowledge of polyurethane chemistry with presentations at the American Coatings Show and Conference, beginning April 11 in Indianapolis.

Mike Jeffries, field technology service manager, Coatings, Adhesives & Specialties, Covestro LLC, will present a tutorial on polyurethane coatings at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 11 during the pre-conference session.

Jeffries’ tutorial will review and compare polyiscocyanates and polyols, the raw material components of polyurethane coatings. He will also cover the various polyurethane coating technologies in use and their advantages and limitations, including one- and two-component solventborne, as well as waterborne chemistries, radiation curing polyurethane coatings and polyurethane powder coatings. He will discuss polyurethane coating formulations and their typical end-use applications.

Kurt Best, senior principal scientist, Coatings, Adhesives & Specialties, Covestro LLC, will present “Balancing Haptic Feel and Performance Properties of Waterborne Polyurethane” at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 12.

Best will discuss the results of a study exploring how to balance coating performance and feel characteristics of polyurethanes used on automotive interior rigid plastic parts. A Design of Experiment (DOE) approach was used to map haptic feel of polyurethane coated plastic substrates against key coating performance targets. The results yield a coating formulation space for hundreds of potential coating formulations and their predicted haptic feel rating overlaid with performance properties. The presentation will detail the study’s attempt to quantify three different haptic ranges, and how this knowledge will impact coating development.

Attendees of the American Coatings Show and Conference can visit Covestro’s booth #2331 to learn more about its coating raw materials and technologies.
