Chrysler Chooses AQUABASE Plus Paint by PPG for National Training Center

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio -- Chrysler Corp. announced it has installed a system using Aquabase Plus waterborne paint by PPG Industries' automotive refinish business in its Auburn Hills, Mich., National Technical Training Center.

Making a change from using traditional solvent-based coatings is part of Chrysler's commitment to using environmentally-responsible products and procedures. This move to using waterborne paint brings the training center into conformance with other Chrysler facilities, such as the majority of assembly plants, which already use PPG waterborne coatings.

Ron Nomura, Chrysler's paint platform body structures manager, dealer technical operations, said, "We have been using PPG systems for years. When we decided to go 'green,' we looked closely at Aquabase Plus paint. We were very impressed. It passed all our standards, it's easier to use, it's excellent for color-matching and blends smoothly."

The National Technical Training Center evaluates equipment and materials and approves aftermarket refinish products for the original-equipment manufacturer (OEM). Implementing the use of waterborne coatings at the center had been considered since California and Canada mandated their use in an effort to reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

"We have always had a strong relationship with Chrysler," said Ken Davis, PPG manager, OEM business development. "Needless to say, we're very pleased Chrysler chose Aquabase Plus paints for its training center. As an OEM, Chrysler's always looking to its manufacturing partners to help continuously improve overall quality. Selecting PPG coatings is recognition of the value and excellence of our products."
