Bayer Scientists Presented Hints for Formulation Based on Waterborne PUDs at Troubleshooting Coatings Defects Symposium

Published on 2011-04-20. Author : SpecialChem

PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Regardless of the technology, formulators have traditionally struggled with paint film defects. With that in mind, a Bayer MaterialScience LLC scientist offered helpful hints for formulating one-component (1K) ambient-cure topcoats and primers based on waterborne polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) at the Troubleshooting Coatings Defects Symposium.

Raymond Stewart, senior scientist, presented One Component Waterborne Dispersions - Keys to Good Formulating Practices, during the symposium, which was sponsored by the Metropolitan New York Coating Association.

Stewart highlighted the strategy for formulating 1K waterborne polyurethane coatings. The foundation for the strategy understands the needs and practices of the customer. This may include Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), time constraints, the approval process, intellectual property concerns and resources, among others.

"Customers are an invaluable source of information and feedback," Stewart explains.

As part of his presentation, Stewart also cited specific examples to help formulators use their time productively in the lab and in other phases of product development and commercialization.
