HONG KONG -- Pharmaceutical manufacturers from across the Asia Pacific region will gather in Hong Kong on October 20-21, 2010 to explore the latest generation of pharmaceutical coating products and equipment live on stage with BASF, Glatt and X-Rite.

The three coating materials and equipment experts have teamed for an innovative workshop at Cyberport in Hong Kong, where they will present practical demonstrations and helpful tips for the latest generation of cost efficient technologies for modern pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Kollicoat® IR Coating Systems by BASF - speeds up production.

Today's pharmaceutical formulators need easier, more robust and cost efficient coating processes. Kollicoat® IR Coating Systems, with excellent flow properties, quick re-dispersibility and very low viscosity, allow high coating speeds over a wide temperature range. At the workshop, pharmaceutical manufacturers can see how the benefits of Kollicoat® IR Coating Systems translate into faster production, higher manufacturing capacity, reduced energy costs and lower carbon emissions. The film produced by Kollicoat® IR Coating Systems is highly elastic yet robust, which improves tablet stability by providing effective protection for the active ingredients without need for additional plasticizers.

Wide variety of instantly-recognizable shades, from just seven base colors

The seven base colors of BASF's Kollicoat® IR Coating Systems allow pharmaceutical formulators to develop unique, instantly recognizable tablets, quickly and in hundreds of different shades. In addition, formulators do not need to disclose their proprietary color information, as well as enjoying a leaner supply chain and short lead times - ensuring that the customer remains agile and responsive in a fast-moving market.

Efficient production processes, consistent high quality

Unlike conventional coatings, Kollicoat® IR Coating Systems are nearly dust-free and can be re-dispersed very rapidly. Their low viscosity allows processers to spray coating suspensions with a high solids content leading to savings in production time. Applications are possible below 30C°, making them ideal for products with thermo-sensitive active ingredients.

At the event, X-Rite will be demonstrating its ColorEye XTH handheld spectrophotometer, which accurately measures colors of tablets and capsules as they are held in custom-made fixtures. The ColorEye XTH can precisely measure the colors of contoured and textured opaque parts in a wide range of sizes, measuring at the same time their pure color and how the human eye responds to surface effects such as gloss or texture. The instrument has different apertures to accommodate a wide range of tablet sizes and shapes.

The whole event will be complemented by Glatt, which will present a selected range of laboratory equipment for solid dosage forms, among them the Midi-Glatt, the TMG-1/6 and the GMPC I Mini-Coater, all with live demonstrations by Glatt experts.

The Midi-Glatt is a flexible solution for a wide range of fluid bed processes such as drying, granulating / agglomerating or coating for product volumes of up to 1 kg batch sizes - hence ideal for research & development departments, colleges and universities. The TMG-1/6 is a unique and flexible lab scale high shear granulator for product development and scale-up. It offers exchangeable working vessels in five different sizes of between 0.5 and 6 liters.

The new GMPC I Mini-Coater offers superior and flexible coating of very small batch sizes (50-2000g), thus reducing research and development costs considerably.
