Akzo Nobel Acquires Swedish Bus Painting Facility

Published on 2003-05-01. Author : SpecialChem

Sassenheim, the Netherlands, 28 April 2003 - Akzo Nobel Car Refinishes has acquired the bus painting facilities of Omni AB in Sweden. Omni AB is a subsidiary of Scania AB, one of the world's leading manufacturers of trucks and buses. Omni AB bus painting facilities are located at its bus manufacturing factory in Katrineholm Sweden.

The new agreement relates to the paint shop and adjoining offices only. Omni AB's bus building operation remains under the ownership of Scania AB. As the supplier of specialist refinish systems to Omni AB, Akzo Nobel regards the acquisition of the paint shop as the ideal opportunity to build upon its relationship with an important customer whilst further developing its commercial vehicle refinish business in the Nordic region.

For Omni AB, the move has enabled the company to focus on core activities. Omni AB Managing Director, Hans Hansson commented: "We are very pleased to be working with Akzo Nobel. It offers them a good business opportunity to take over a leading painting operation and, at the same time, leave us free to focus on developing and manufacturing our range of Omni city buses."

As of April 1, 2003 the paint shop, including all eleven employees, equipment and inventory came under the responsibility of Akzo Nobel Car Refinishes.

"Akzo Nobel is continually looking for opportunities to build closer relationships with customers and this deal is particularly beneficial to all parties," said Cor de Grauw, General Manager Akzo Nobel Car Refinishes. "In addition to the facilities within the Katrineholm site, we now have a group of skilled commercial vehicle refinishers to add to our flourishing business."

Akzo Nobel, based in the Netherlands, serves customers throughout the world with healthcare products, coatings and chemicals. Consolidated sales for 2002 totaled EUR 14 billion. The Company currently employs approximately 67,500 people in more than 80 countries. Financial results for the second quarter will be published on July 18, 2003.

Akzo Nobel Car Refinishes supplies paint, decals, services and software for car repair, commercial vehicle and transportation markets. The main product lines include Sikkens and Lesonal and several leading brands in the commercial vehicles sector. Sales for 2002 totaled EUR 713 million.
