AkzoNobel Powder Coatings Protecting Electrical Components EVs AkzoNobel launches a new line of Resicoat EV powder coatings to protect the battery system and electrical components of a new generation of electric vehicles (EVs).

The future success of EVs depends on the performance of the battery and associated systems. However, the performance of the battery is strongly influenced by its environment, which is why it must be protected to guarantee the performance of the vehicle and the safety of the passengers.

Improving Electrical Current Insulation & Corrosion Protection

Powder coatings can improve its performance by insulating it from electrical current and protecting it from corrosion. Thus, manufacturers can extend its lifespan and ensure that the battery performs better and lasts longer.

Each of the five product lines developed within the Resicoat EV range has been specifically innovated to improve the safety and performance of tomorrow's EVs. They have superior electrical insulation properties and improved thermal management to protect battery systems, motors and electrical storage units. The range includes:

  • Resicoat EVpack - Offers a range of protective properties for the battery pack or enclosure to isolate electrical systems
  • Resicoat EVcell - Provides exceptional cell-to-cell electrical insulation for even the most complex designs
  • Resicoat EVcooling - Designed to provide superior performance in terms of thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, edge coverage and film consistency when applied to cooling tubes and plates.
  • Resicoat EVbusbar - To coat busbars that carry and distribute electricity to improve heat dissipation and support lower fire load with longer life under thermal impact.
  • Resicoat EVmotor - To protect the electric motor, offers epoxy powder solutions specially designed for the electrical insulation of hairpin stators.

Key solutions in the Resicoat EV range are tested and approved to UL 94 V-0 which allows vehicle systems to tolerate some exposure to flame without igniting. They are also tested and approved to UL746B and UL1446 standards, ensuring their resistance to thermal degradation and potential damage that can occur at elevated temperatures.

Guaranteed Durability with Very Low VOCs

Sustainability is an important factor in the democratization of electric vehicles and is of similar importance to AkzoNobel. The guaranteed durability of the Resicoat EV range in protecting critical components means that these components last as long as possible before needing replacement.

Resicoat powder coatings contain very low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and are industry RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) compliant, giving painters and customers peace of mind.

Jeff Jirak, managing director of AkzoNobel Powder Coatings, says innovation is key to accelerating future EVs. "For more than 60 years, we have developed the expertise and innovation inherent in our Resicoat brand to help solve the challenge of electrical insulation.

We understand how exceptional powder coating, combined with the right application technique, can provide consistent electrical insulation throughout the life of key components, such as battery packs. EV. This is further proof of our commitment to supporting our customers through partnerships and product development to create, fuel and protect the creations of the future," added Jirak.
