A new silica particle technology to improve the durability of architectural coatings

In modern architectural paints, burnishing and wet abrasion resistance are key formulating challenges and important differentiating factors. The existing filler or formulation options leave formulators with limited support to overcome the challenges for differentiated products.

These performance attributes can directly be linked to the particle morphology of fillers and the resulting surface profile of the film. Recent process advancements at Evonik have produced a novel class of synthetic silica with:

  • unique spherical particle morphology,
  • narrow particle distribution, and
  • very low surface area and porosity.

The presentation will give you an overview about the options to formulate durable wall paints and the limits of different raw materials. Beyond that the new technology based on precipitated Silica particles will be presented with focus on the product properties and their benefits in architectural coatings. Special attention will be paid on improving burnish resistance and wet scrub resistance of interior wall paints as well as on the test methods and formulation hints.

Markus Vogel Markus Vogel is working as Head of Applied Research & Technology for Architectural Coatings and floor coatings in the business line Coating Additives at Evonik Resource Efficiency GmbH. After studying in the field of paint and coatings technology at Niederrhein University, he began as an application engineer at an epoxy resin producer. In 2007 he joined Evonik Tego Chemie GmbH, where he worked as technical service manager in the field of architectural coatings and later on in the field of pigment concentrates. Since 2015 he is responsible for the market segments of architectural coatings and floor coatings.
