How to formulate MEKO-free alkyds and achieve high performance

This is a Past Webinar

Oxidatively cured resins, such as solvent borne, high solid and low VOC alkyds are especially susceptible to in-can skinning due to the reaction that occurs with the resin in the paint and the oxygen trapped at the surface of the can. The leading industry additive to prevent skinning in alkyd paints has been MEKO (methyl-ethyl-ketoxime). It’s no surprise that the increased efforts for more sustainable, non-toxic coating products are having a huge impact on the use of MEKO.

The European Commission recently published the entry of MEKO with the classification of 1B carcinogen with a concentration limit at ≥ 0.1% (ATP 15 part 3 Annex VI). From March 1, 2022, formulators cannot utilize MEKO if it meets or exceeds the concentration limits. This directive, coupled with the many protocols required for handling the raw material based on its hazard pictograms, is a significant regulatory push to remove this raw material from alkyd formulations.

So what can formulators do now to adapt their formulations? What alternatives do they have? Formulators worldwide are looking for MEKO-free alternatives that can balance good dry times and prevent in-can skinning. Join the experts at Borchers to learn how you can use MEKO-free alternatives in combination with high-performance catalysts to prevent in-can skinning. This solution will help you to formulate sustainable coatings without compromising on performance.
