A new coalescing agent – looking beyond the VOC

Aspects related to environment, health and safety are increasingly present and important in new products developments for the paints and coatings industry. The topic related to volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) emissions have undoubtedly been one of the most discussed themes for years, however, other topics related to environmental aspects such as renewable raw material sources, water and energy consumption are also emerging as a point to be considered when developing new products or replacing current raw materials.

Moreover, these new raw materials should contribute for formulating a coating with higher durability, increasing the time interval required for maintenance and consequently decreasing resource usage over time.

Why should you view this webinar?

In this webinar, you will learn:
  • How the use of Hansen solubility parameters (HSP) supported the coalescent development for achieving a good compatibility with different latexes used in architectural coatings formulations and improving the film formation. The quality assessment of the latex films formed was done by using AFM (atomic force microscopy) images.
  • Other environmental aspects that can be considered besides the VOC content using LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), e.g. Climate Change (MC), Human Toxicity (TH) and Water Depletion (DA).
  • Improving environmental aspects on coalescing agents is not a synonym for reducing performance. Results related to hardness evolution, accelerated dirt pick-up resistance and surfactant leaching demonstrated it is possible to deliver a great performance and reduces VOC content at the same time.

Alann de Oliveira Piagentini Bragatto Alann Bragatto has a degree and a Master’s degree in Chemistry from the Institute of Chemistry of University of São Paulo (IQ-USP). During his Master’s degree he studied the replacement of solvent-borne by water-borne DTM paints, focused on the development of paint formulations and implementation of EIS as a fast tool to access the corrosion resistance of paint films. He has been working over the last 10 years on the coatings industry, always on R&D and Application Development areas. Nowadays, he works as a R&D Researcher at Oxiteno, focused on the development of new coalescing, wetting and dispersing agents.
