Functional Coatings

SpecialChem / Feb 22, 2006

The title of engineer has found its way into any number of job descriptions in virtually every field. The list doesn't end with Sanitary Engineers, Traffic Engineers or Culinary Engineers but continues on to include most professions, whether technically orientated or not. As such, the world's Coil Coaters and others who apply a coating to a metallic surface should probably be called Surface Engineers. Surface Engineers can modify the surface of most metals with an application of a thin film to create peripheral properties that are substantially different then those found solely with the base metal. There are a large number of applications that greatly benefit from this surface engineering process and new applications are discovered every year. A coated surface might be made more decorative, more weather resistant or simply display some physical property that is not present in the base metal. A properly modified surface might also assist the fabricator and allow stampers or roll formers the ability to process more material at higher speeds with less breakage or rejects.
