Coil Coating Part I - The History

SpecialChem / Feb 16, 2005

Coil Coating has become a significant market for the chemical and coatings industry within the last half of the twentieth century. Most estimates are that market in North America alone ranges from 28,000,000 to 30,000,000 US gallons. Europe, Asia and South America quite likely bring the total global market to over one hundred million gallons for those companies who are supplying the world's coil coaters. There have been extreme price pressures placed on the coating manufactures during the past couple of years. This has been especially true in Europe where a larger portion of the total market is devoted to Building products and other Construction products which tend to become commoditized over time. As a result, there has been aggressive consolidation among the suppliers and many of the well known and respected coatings companies of the past are now operating within the confines of huge corporate entities. Companies such as BASF, Akzo Nobel, PPG and Beckers certainly hold a significant share of the global market with Valspar holding a key portion of the North American Construction and Container markets.
