Changing Coalescent in Coating Formulations

SpecialChem / May 2, 2014

Coalescent agents are used to reduce the Tg of water-based coatings below the minimum film-formation temperature (MFFT). The coalescent agent acts as a temporary plasticizer that enables the dispersed binder particles to coalesce into a smooth, uniform homogeneous film. This process facilitates the fulfillment of optimum coating properties. Coalescent agents are less volatile than water and remain in the film for an extended period of time before completely evaporating.
