It is interesting to note that the reporting of new technology seems to be making a good job of mirroring the ebb and flow of the global coatings industry itself. That is deep recession in 2009 followed by a recovery in the next year and an improving trend in the following year, so that perhaps 2011 will finish up with close to 100 such announcements given the pattern in the first seven months. In fact, perhaps there may even be a lead/lag situation where new technology gets an airing some time after a general improvement in the overall health of the industry and then reaches new heights as the pace of improvement quickens. That would equate with the generally good state of the industry in the first two quarters of 2011 though the rather gloomy cost-led outlook for the second half of the year may yet bring another change in direction. As we said before, only time will tell whether such predictions have any merit or whether the case hinges on simply more availability of information or a more proficient approach to collecting it.
