Two rheology additives for aqueous systems BYK®-420 and BYK®-425 are rheology additives that are used to adjust the flow behavior in aqueous paints and coatings.

BYK-420 belongs to the product family of "liquid thixotropic additives". The product is characterized by its easy handling, with the result that, by simply stirring, a homogeneous distribution in the formulation is achieved. Consequently, a strong thixotropic flow with a strong shear thinning effect is guaranteed and the processing is not negatively affected during the application. BYK-420 is also suitable as a "post additive" for subsequently adjusting the viscosity of the coating, and its very distinct anti-settling properties improve storage stability. Its use to prevent settling is therefore widespread in aqueous pigment concentrates.

BYK-425 has proved to be particularly effective in the thickening of binder-rich formulations, creating a shear thinning, pseudoplastic flow behavior. The main advantage is the possibility of applying large layer thicknesses without runners and sagging, thereby guaranteeing improved coverage in pigmented systems in one easy step. Using BYK-425 in combination with BYK-420 will also allow the required flow behavior of paints and coatings to be optimized.

The special chemical composition of BYK-425 guarantees universal effectiveness and advantages in the behavior of a variety of different applications. Besides paint and coating formulations, BYK-425 will be used in surfactant-containing systems such as detergents and fabric softeners for rheological adjustments. Furthermore it can be applied for paper coating.
