Sovermol 1092 - a 'Green' Polyol for Critical Curing Conditions From Cognis

Published on 2008-01-29. Author : SpecialChem

Monheim -- Sustainability is becoming more and more of a must-have feature in the industrial coatings market. Apart from being environmentally sound, the products also have to match the performance features of conventional solutions that users have become accustomed to. Sovermol 1092, the latest addition to the Sovermol range of polyols from global specialty chemicals supplier Cognis, fulfills all of these complex demands. Derived from renewable feedstocks, the new "green" polyol is designed for challenging applications and boasts impressive performance.

Sovermol 1092 is a bio-based, VOC-free, branched polyether/-ester that shows best performance under critical curing conditions such as high temperatures and high humidity. Even under extreme conditions, it shows remarkable mechanical properties, especially hard elastic performance combined with a shore D hardness of around 85. An additional benefit is its outstanding water resistance. Under appropriate test conditions (28 days tap water storage at 90°C) weight in a 10 mm coating had only increased by 3.7 percent, and by 4.5 percent in a 1 mm coating. Mechanical properties such as elongation or tensile strength had not changed after this test.

Sovermol 1092 is extremely hydrophobic: better surface at high temperature and high humidity conditions (no micro-foam without adding additives or sieves). Curing at 30? and 85% relative humidity
Sovermol 1092 Vs. First-generation polyethers/-esters

These performance properties mean Sovermol 1092 is best suited for applications where high performance is required and that come into contact with water during and after curing, or that have to cure under high humidity. Examples are flooring, roofing, encapsulation, or composite coatings and adhesives. Performance is enhanced by the polyol's being very easy to handle, due to its low viscosity. This gives manufacturers the opportunity to save overall costs of the formulation by increasing filler content. Says Paula Gómez-Perea, Marketing Manager Functional Products Europe at Cognis: "Sovermol 1092 is a new generation of extremely hydrophobic polyols based on renewable raw materials. It combines cost savings, performance benefits and environmental soundness, thus helping our customers serve the latest market demands."

Sovermol - effective protection against the many environmental hazards Sovermol polyols from Cognis are known to be ideal for demanding applications; products from the range are crucial ingredients for example in composites coatings for wind power plants offering protection against sunlight, salt water and mechanical stress. They provide superior adhesion and hydrophobicity, high rupture resistance and high chemical stability. The products are naturally sourced and free from volatile organic compounds (VOC - 2004/42 EC) or solvents, making them environmentally sound. Other next-generation "green" polyols from Cognis with outstanding performance under critical conditions are Sovermol 818 and Sovermol 819.
