Smooth Operator: "K" LINE and Intersleek® 900 in New 100 Ship Milestone

Published on 2008-06-04. Author : SpecialChem

Felling, U.K. -- International Paint Ltd. has announced the completion of the 100th ship coated with the revolutionary, fluoropolymer based, patented foul release product Intersleek 900.

Working in close co-operation with "K" LINE, the Japanese headquartered global shipping and logistics company, the 1998 built, 77,302 dwt Type 77 thermal coal carrier, the 'Corona Emblem' has been successfully completed at Huarun Dadong Dockyard Co., Ltd. in Shanghai, China.

"K" LINE's General Manager of the Maritime Cost Administration Group said, "We're delighted to be working with International Paint on this project and very pleased that the 'Corona Emblem' is the 100th Intersleek 900 application. For "K" LINE, Intersleek 900 forms a strategic part of our maintenance reduction programme with associated cost savings through reduced time in dock, blasting and repair costs and coatings volumes. We also fully expect to achieve all of our hull coatings environmental and performance objectives through the use of this exciting new technology".

Speaking on behalf of International Paint Ltd., Mr. Alistair Williamson, Worldwide Marine Marketing Manager said, "In a market hugely influenced by fuel cost, we're very pleased that the value for money offered by the fluoropolymer Intersleek 900 has been quickly recognised by the industry and I congratulate "K" LINE on this 100th application. What's quite remarkable is that this milestone has been achieved six times faster than the first 100 ships coated with our silicone based product Intersleek 700. This is testimony to the exceptional quality of Intersleek 900 and to the performance benefits it can deliver".

Exceptionally smooth with unprecedented low levels of average hull roughness, excellent foul release capabilities and good resistance to mechanical damage means that for the very first time all vessels operating above 10 knots can now benefit from foul release technology - a fact reflected in the diverse range of ship types and operational profiles in the Intersleek 900 track record which includes ULCCs, VLCCs, bulk carriers, general cargo carriers, coastal tankers, gas carriers, reefers, cruise liners, container ships, naval craft and catamarans with operating speeds between 10 and 39 knots and tonnage between 1000 and 442,000 dwt.

Whilst offering predicted fuel and emissions savings* of 2% in comparison to Intersleek 700 and 6% in comparison to biocide containing SPC (self polishing copolymer) antifoulings, customer in-service experience on this diverse range of 100 ships has demonstrated savings considerably higher than this - some well into double figures.

A ceremony to mark the occasion of the 100th ship application was held jointly between International Paint Ltd. and "K" LINE in Tokyo, Japan on the 27th May 2008. Attended by 60 people representing "K" LINE and International Paint, Mr. Bill McPherson, International Paint Marine & Protective Coatings General Manager, presented the Intersleek 900 100th Ship Award to Mr. Yoshida Katsue, "K" LINE Representative Director & Managing Executive. Mr. Katsue said, "Inflating crude oil prices is a big issue. We think Intersleek 900, which enables the reduction of fuel consumption, could be the solution for this".
