RONA Launches New ECO Paint Line Across Canada

Published on 2009-09-17. Author : SpecialChem

BOUCHERVILLE, QUEBEC -- RONA Inc., Canada's largest distributor and retailer of hardware, home renovation and gardening products, carried its eco-responsible initiative another step forward by adding recycled latex paint to its range of RONA ECO products. The new line of paints offers a selection of 16 trend-setting interior colours in hues inspired by nature. The paint is also offered in a floor and patio grade.

In order to carry the RONA ECO label, a product must demonstrate a lower environmental impact throughout its entire life cycle, subject to review by experts from the International Chair in Life Cycle Assessment at the Ecole Polytechnique of Universite de Montreal. RONA ECO paint is also certified by EcoLogoM, one of the largest and most respected eco-labelling programs in North America. The recycled paint was formerly sold at RONA under the Boomerang brand and was available only in RONA Quebec and Ontario stores. RONA ECO brand paint is now available throughout the entire network of RONA stores across Canada.

"In response to Canadians' growing concern over respect for the environment, we wanted to be able to offer ecologically responsible paint across Canada," said RONA executive vice president of merchandising Normand Dumont. "This new paint line available nationwide now joins the extensive selection of paint products available in our stores and will do its part to strengthen RONA's position as a leader in the retail paint sector in Canada."

"Life cycle analysis is a rigorous process which measures a product's environmental impact from its initial production to the end of its useful life, in order to avoid the transfer of environmentally harmful impacts from one phase to the next," said International Life Cycle Assessment Chair technical coordinator Edouard Clement. "In this respect, our work with RONA has been very productive, leading to the introduction of over 300 RONA ECO products since the new label was launched in 2008."

Attractive and affordable

The new RONA ECO paint line makes it easier for consumers to think about respecting the environment without having to worry whether they're compromising on product quality. Available in 16 colours in a velvet finish, this interior latex loses nothing by comparison with the major brands in terms of performance. It's easy to apply, has high hiding power and easy-to-wash. What's more, it also offers an outstanding quality-price ratio.

Besides RONA ECO paint, RONA also offers a wide selection of eco-responsible paints, stains and varnishes.

The life cycle of paint

RONA ECO recycled paint was developed according to rigorous criteria to leave the smallest possible ecological footprint in each phase of its life cycle, from the paint recovery and restoration process at the manufacturing stage, to post-consumer processing. Of all paints available on the market, this is the one with the smallest environmental impact over its life cycle as a whole.

RONA ECO paint is made in Quebec by Peintures recuperees du Quebec. Made from 90% quality recycled paint, RONA ECO is EcoLogoM certified, low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and generates only a quarter of the greenhouse gases normally produced by other paints during manufacturing.

RONA has been recovering used paint at its stores in Quebec for over 10 years - a practice it has extended to stores in Halifax and Ontario as well. More than 2 million kilograms of paint have been collected by its retail chains for recycling and reprocessing. After transformation, the leftover paints again become products that can be used by customers instead of being treated as waste. RONA cares seriously about preventing waste paint from ending up in landfill sites and is currently working on the introduction of paint recovery programs in all Canadian provinces that do not yet have this service in RONA stores.

Over the next few months, RONA will add new colours to its RONA ECO paint line, so that consumers can make an eco-responsible choice for every room in their home, while keeping in tune with today's most exciting colour trends.
