New AEROSIL®-based dispersion from Evonik enables the production of scratch-proof and brilliant coating systems - easy to use

Published on 2007-11-20. Author : SpecialChem

"More than just a powder" is the appropriate slogan for the evergreen AEROSIL®, the fumed silica from Evonik. Over the decades this product has won over customers on account of its ability to continually produce new properties in coating systems, with scratch resistance becoming increasingly important. The specialty chemicals group, part of the chemicals business area of Evonik Industries AG, now presents yet another AEROSIL® innovation at this year's China Coat exhibition. VP Disp. CO 1030 - an easy-to-use dispersion based on the structure-modified fumed silica AEROSIL® R 9200, successfully introduced to the Asian coatings market at the China Coat 2005.

The development product VP Disp. CO 1030, a 30 percent dispersion of AEROSIL® R 9200 in 1-methoxy-2-propyl acetate (MPA), allows for the manufacture of brilliant coatings of greater scratch resistance and is easily applied. All it takes to prepare a dispersion with VP Disp. CO 1030 is simple mixing; the optimal aggregate morphology has already been adjusted and, through suitable additives, stabilized. Additionally, the concentration can be higher, and the particle size smaller than in binder-containing dispersions. This reduces the dispersion time, thus minimizing abrasion. VP Disp. CO 1030 also contains an additive customized for AEROSIL® R 9200 optimizing the flow behavior of the coating and therefore helping to achieve the desired optical properties in the finished film. None of the additives used is silicone-based. The dispersion is stable against sedimentation, even when stored over several months at temperatures of about 40 degrees Celsius.

Evonik's own center of excellence for AEROSIL in coatings is an important cornerstone of the coatings industry, encompassing as it does Evonik's accumulated technical expertise in the field. Since the late 1990s, experts there have also been working on improving the scratch resistance of coating systems. One goal of this development work is to produce easy-to-use solutions for Evonik's customers. With VP Disp. CO 1030, the coatings specialists have now contributed significantly toward establishing a new benchmark for scratch-resistant clear coatings. In addition to this technical service laboratory, Evonik's Aerosil & Silanes Business Unit offers its customers a global production and service network and the most comprehensive product range available on the market, which also includes aluminum oxide and other fumed mixed oxides.

Evonik's Aerosil & Silanes Business Unit is well represented all over the world, with more than 100 sales offices in 95 countries. The large number of Degussa customers thus receive optimal support from an expert service provider and consultant.

Evonik's booth at the CHINACOAT exhibition (held between November 21 and 23, 2007) is 2F03-08 in Hall E2. AEROSIL® experts will be on hand to provide information on the advantages of this new product.

Additives A multitude of coatings contain additives in addition to pigments and binders. They play an important role in the development of high-quality coating systems.

TEGO® provides a broad range of additives for all types of liquid coatings and printing inks. AEROSIL® fumed silica is widely used to control the rheology of liquid paints and coatings. It prevents hardsettling in coating systems containing pigments, fillers or matting agents. Adding VESTOSINT® fine powders to coating formulations creates abrasion-resistant, highly elastic textured coatings. The particles act as impact absorbers and prevent the surface from cracking.
