New Acryflow Resins Developed; Formulation Tool Kit Complete

Published on 2003-05-09. Author : SpecialChem

HOUSTON, MAY 5---Lyondell Chemical Company (NYSE:LYO) has developed Acryflow(tm) A90 and P90 acrylic polyols. These new polyols complete a resin system designed to provide wide formulation latitude and reduce resin inventories and costs, while shortening time-to-market for new industrial maintenance, automotive, transportation, general industrial, wood and plastic coatings.

The Acryflow family of polyols now consists of five resins (P90, P120, M100, A90 and A140) designed to work together in a system called the Resin Management Concept(tm) (RMC). RMC gives formulators the flexibility they need to create a multitude of products with only five resins, rather than dozens. Unlike conventional polyols designed for a specific purpose with specific properties, ACRYFLOW polyols are designed to be blended together in countless combinations to achieve a host of properties.

According to market development manager Joel Heilman, "RMC can greatly reduce resin inventories, saving formulators time and money. It also can reduce time-to-market for new coatings since all five resins are completely compatible and their individual and blended properties are already known, formulators can more quickly arrive at an optimal formulation with a high level of confidence that the coating will perform according to expectations."

Acryflow polyols are prepared in a proprietary process using hydroxy- functional allylic monomers. Unlike conventional acrylics, Acryflow polyols maintain their functionality at a low molecular weight, providing good performance with low VOCs. Also, in contrast to conventional polyols, which can contain up to 15% non-functional polymer, Acryflow polyols contain zero non-functional polymer. Less isocyanate crosslinker is needed to cure coatings while chemical and abrasion resistance, pot life, through cure, appearance and weatherability are improved.

Acryflow P90 is a low-viscosity acrylic polyol, supplied as a solvent- free liquid. It is an excellent reactive diluent for a variety of coating systems including 2K urethanes and baking enamels. It is also a versatile raw material for moisture curable urethanes, acrylated urethane oligomers and other 100% solids coating and adhesive systems. It can be blended with hard Acryflow polyols such as A140, A90 and M100 to yield coatings with superior appearance, low VOCs and outstanding toughness and weatherability.

Acryflow A90 is a hard (Tg ~ 55° C) acrylic polyol with low isocyanate and solvent demand. Supplied as a 70% solution in n-butyl acetate, it improves the hardness, dry time, abrasion resistance and weatherability of 2K urethane coatings and baking enamels. Low cost, low VOC (<2.8lbs allon)="" coatings="" with="" superior="" gloss="" and="" color="" retention="" are="" readily="" obtained="" by="" blending="" acryflow="" a90="" with="" acryflow="" p90="" polyols="" even="" without="" exempt="" solvents.="">
