Lyondell Introduces New High Solids Acrylic Brochure

Published on 2003-11-19. Author : SpecialChem

Lyondell Chemical Company (NYSE:LYO) has issued a 16-page brochure detailing use of its ACRYFLOW™ acrylic polyols in industrial maintenance and marine coatings. The brochure highlights the numerous advantages Lyondell's high-solids, low molecular weight hydroxyl-functional acrylic polymers offer to a variety of VOC compliant, durable thermoset coatings.

ACRYFLOW™ Polyols For High-Performance Industrial Maintenance and Marine Coatings describes the unique ACRYFLOW chemistry and the property improvements their use imparts to coatings. These benefits include enhanced coatings appearance, hardness and chemical resistance, reduced isocyanate crosslinker requirements, extended pot life and faster cure rates.

Designed to work together in a system called the Resin Management Concept™ (RMc), ACRYFLOW acrylic polyols give formulators the flexibility they need to create a multitude of products with only a few resins, rather than dozens. In contrast to using conventional polyols - each typically designed to meet a specific need - formulators can blend ACRYFLOW polyols together in various combinations to achieve a broad array of properties.

Featured in the brochure are side-by-side performance comparisons of ACRYFLOW-based coatings versus conventional acrylic urethane coatings, an explanation of RMc, and an illustration of how the Tg (glass transition temperature) and hydroxyl content of the individual resins are used to determine what resin blend will give the desired properties in the final coating applications. Five resins in the ACRYFLOW family, (which includes both hard and soft resins supplied in both high and low functionality versions), are described and starting formulations for eleven types of topcoats are provided. A formulation guide addresses calculations of final coating properties based on resin properties including Tg, OH Number and OH Equivalent Weight and Isocyanate (NCO) Index and Equivalent Weight. Finally, a discussion of compatible solvents, catalysts and additives is presented.
