LORD Corporation Launches Autoseal® 3500, an Abrasion-Resistant Aqueous Coating for EPDM Glass Run Channel Applications

Published on 2009-06-03. Author : SpecialChem

LORD Corporation - a global leader in weatherstrip coatings and rubber-to-metal bonding adhesives for industrial and automotive markets - has launched Autoseal® 3500 coating, an aqueous, low-gloss coating designed for use on dense EPDM glass run channel applications where a high degree of abrasion resistance is needed.

LORD Autoseal 3500 has excellent functional abrasion resistance, is chemically resistant, and has a low sheen and smooth appearance. This coating also offers a low coefficient of friction.

Although the product was just launched to the marketplace, it has been in development for approximately two years. Based on extensive testing with a Tier One supplier, the performance of Autoseal 3500 was validated on the Lambda platform and consequently added as a General Motors (GM) best practice coating for glass run applications. Therefore, LORD Autoseal 3500 can be quoted for glass run application on the future Alpha sedan. It was adopted on the Chevy Traverse, Saturn Outlook and GMC Acadia 2009 models for glass run channel applications.

Autoseal 3500 was developed in response to the need of a weatherstrip supplier seeking to switch from conventional solvent coatings to an environmentally-preferred product to meet 2009 HAPs and VOC regulation compliance. In addition to meeting environmental factors, the supplier sought an aqueous coating with greater functional durability, especially abrasion resistance. Since this supplier was using a solvent-based glass-run coating for a product they supplied to GM, they would incur an increase in production cost by using an incinerator.

As an aqueous, environmentally-friendly, chemically-resistant product, LORD Autoseal 3500 meets a specific market need and will be a viable solution across many platforms. The coating offers excellent functional abrasion resistance with a smooth appearance.

With headquarters in Cary, N.C., USA, and sales in excess of $700-MM, LORD Corporation is a privately-held company that designs, manufactures and markets devices and systems to manage mechanical motion and control noise and vibration; formulates, produces and sells general purpose and specialty adhesives and coatings; and develops products and systems utilizing magnetically responsive technologies. With manufacturing in nine countries and offices in more than 15 major business centers, LORD Corporation employs more than 2,500 worldwide.
