India's NITT Develops Special Paint

Tiruchirappalli (TN) -- A special paint coating that can arrest heat radiation in houses and buildings has been developed by the students and staff of the National Institute of Technology, (NITT) formerly the Regional Engineering College, here.

"The thin layer coating, a blend of chemical compounds and white in colour, when applied on terraces, prevents heat from penetrating into buildings by deflecting the rays of the sun," NITT director Dr P Subramaniyam claimed here.

The paint coating had been developed by the research wing of the Centre for Energy and Environmental Science and Technology (CEESAT) of NITT and the institute had gone in for direct marketing of the product, he told reporters.

The paint would help reduce electricity consumption by around 25 per cent when applied on the terraces of airconditioned rooms, he said.

Apart from its application on terraces, experiments on applying the coating to outer walls had resulted in a remarkable change in the inside ambience of buildings, Subramaniyam claimed.

Instead of transferring the technology for commercial production, NITT had decided to market the product themselves as a turn-key project of supplying and taking up the coating job, which had been assigned to the institute students themselves as a matter of encouragement, he said.

The project had been receiving "full support" of the Union Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources, he added.
